古之學者為己,今之學者為人。學而優則仕,仕而優則學,古人之風也。修天爵以取人爵,獲人爵而棄天爵,末俗之風也。古人之風,夫子所以昌言。末俗之風,孟子所以扼腕。然而古人之學者二,今人之學者有四。夫子門徒,轉相師受,通聖人之經者謂之儒,屈原宋玉枚乘長卿之徒,止於辭賦則謂之文。今之儒博窮子史,但能識其事,不能通其理者,謂之學。至如不便為詩如閻纂,善為章奏如柏松,若此之流,汎謂之筆,吟詠風謠,流連哀思者,謂之文。而學者率多不便屬辭,守其章句,遲於通變,質於心用。學者不能定禮樂之是非,辯經教之宗旨,徒能揚榷前言,抵掌多識。然而挹源知流,亦足可貴。筆退則非謂成篇,進則不云取義,神其巧惠筆端而已。至如文者,惟須綺縠紛披,宮徵靡曼,唇吻遒會,情靈搖蕩,而古之文筆,今之文筆,其源又異。至如彖、繫、風、雅,名、墨、農、刑,虎炳豹鬱,彬彬君子,卜談四始,李言七略,源流已詳。今亦置而弗辨。潘安仁清綺若是,而評者止稱情切,故知為文之難也。曹子建、陸士衡,皆文士也,觀其辭致側密,事語堅明,意匠有序,遺言無失。雖不以儒者命家,此亦悉通其義也。遍觀文士,略盡知之。至於謝元暉,始見貧小,然而天才命世,過足以補尤。任彥升甲部闕如,才長筆翰,善輯流略,遂有龍門之名,斯亦一時之盛。夫今之俗,搢紳稚齒,閭巷小生,學以浮動為貴,用百家則多尚輕側,涉經記則不通大旨。苟取成章,貴在悅目,龍首豕足,隨時之義;牛頭馬髀,彊相附會。事等張君之弧,徒觀外澤;亦如南陽之里,難就窮檢矣。射魚指天,事徒勤而靡獲;適郢首燕,馬雖良而不到。夫挹酌道德,憲章前言者,君子所以行也。是故言顧行,行顧言。原憲云:「無財謂之貧,學道不行,謂之病。」末俗學徒,頗或異此。或假茲以為伎術,或狎之以為戲笑。若謂為伎術者,犁靬眩人,皆伎術也。若以為戲笑者,少府鬥獲皆戲笑也。未聞彊學自立,和樂慎禮,若此者也。口談忠孝,色方在於過鴻;形服儒衣,心不則於德義。既彌乖於本行,實有長於澆風。一失其源,則其流已遠,與其不隕獲於貧賤,不充詘於富貴,不畏君王,不累長上,不聞有司者,何其相反之甚。
