Xian Wen:
The Master said, "Alas! there is no one that knows me." Zi Gong said, "What do you mean by thus saying - that no one knows you?" The Master replied, "I do not murmur against Heaven. I do not grumble against men. My studies lie low, and my penetration rises high. But there is Heaven - that knows me!"

嚴公七年「四月辛卯夜,恆星不見,夜中星隕如雨」。董仲舒、劉向以為常星二十八宿者,人君之象也;眾星,萬民之類也。列宿不見,象諸侯微也;眾星隕墜,民失其所也。夜中者,為中國也。不及地而復,象齊桓起而救存之也。鄉亡桓公,星遂至地,中國其良絕矣。劉向以為夜中者,言不得終性命,中道敗也。或曰象其叛也,言當中道叛其上也。天垂象以視下,將欲人君防惡遠非,慎卑省微,以自全安也。如人君有賢明之材,畏天威命,若高宗謀祖己,成王泣金縢,改過修正,立信布德,存亡繼絕,修廢舉逸,下學而上達,裁什一之稅,復三日之役,節用儉服,以惠百姓,則諸侯懷德,士民歸仁,災消而福興矣。遂莫肯改寤,法則古人,而各行其私意,終於君臣乖離,上下交怨。自是之後,齊、宋之君弒,譚、遂、邢、衛之國滅,宿遷於宋,蔡獲於楚,晉相弒殺,五世乃定,此其效也。左氏傳曰:「恆星不見,夜明也;星隕如雨,與雨偕也。」劉歆以為晝象中國,夜象夷狄。夜明,故常見之星皆不見,象中國微也。「星隕如雨」,如,而也,星隕而且雨,故曰「與雨偕也」,明雨與星隕,兩變相成也。洪範曰:「庶民惟星。」《》曰:「雷雨作,解。」是歲歲在玄枵,齊分野也。夜中而星隕,象庶民中離上也。雨以解過施,復從上下,象齊桓行伯,復興周室也。周四月,夏二月也,日在降婁,魯分野也。先是,衛侯朔奔齊,衛公子黔牟立,齊帥諸侯伐之,天子使使救衛。魯公子溺專政,會齊以犯王命,嚴弗能止,卒從而伐衛,逐天王所立。不義至甚,而自以為功。名去其上,政繇下作,尤著,故星隕於魯,天事常象也。

古之儒者,博學虖六藝之文。六學者,王教之典籍,先聖所以明天道,正人倫,致至治之成法也。周道既衰,壞於幽厲,禮樂征伐自諸侯出,陵夷二百餘年而孔子興,以聖德遭季世,知言之不用而道不行,乃歎曰:「鳳鳥不至,河不出圖,吾已矣夫!」「文王既沒,文不在茲乎?」於是應聘諸侯,以答禮行誼。西入周,南至楚,畏匡厄陳,奸七十餘君。適齊聞韶,三月不知肉味;自衛反魯,然後樂正,雅頌各得其所。究觀古今之篇籍,乃稱曰:「大哉,堯之為君也!唯天為大,唯堯則之。巍巍乎其有成功也,煥乎其有文章也!」又云:「周監於二世,郁郁乎文哉!吾從周。」於是敘書則斷堯典,稱樂則法韶舞,論詩則首周南。綴周之禮,因魯春秋,舉十二公行事,繩之以文武之道,成一王法,至獲麟而止。蓋晚而好易,讀之韋編三絕,而為之傳。皆因近聖之事,鲈立先王之教,故曰:「述而不作,信而好古;」「下學而上達,知我者其天乎!」
