饗禘有樂，	In feasting (the orphaned young in spring) and at the vernal sacrifice in the ancestral temple they had music;
而食嘗無樂，	but in feeding (the aged) and at the autumnal sacrifice they had no music:
陰陽之義也。	-these were based in the developing and receding influences (prevalent in nature).
凡飲，	All drinking
養陽氣也；	serves to nourish the developing influence;
凡食，	all eating
養陰氣也。	to nourish the receding influence.
故春禘而秋嘗；	Hence came the different character of the vernal and autumnal sacrifices;
春饗孤子，	the feasting the orphaned young in spring,
秋食耆老，	and the feeding the aged in autumn:
其義一也。	-the idea was the same.
而食嘗無樂。	But in the feeding and at the autumnal sacrifice there was no music.
飲，	Drinking
養陽氣也，	serves to nourish the developing influence
故有樂；	and therefore is accompanied with music.
食，	Eating
養陰氣也，	serves to nourish the receding influence,
故無聲。	and therefore is not accompanied with music.
凡聲，	All modulation of sound
陽也。	partakes of the character of development.
