“尊德乐义，	'Honour virtue and delight in righteousness,

故士穷不失义，	Therefore, a scholar, though poor, does not let go his righteousness;
达不离道。	though prosperous, he does not leave his own path.
穷不失义，	Poor and not letting righteousness go
故士得己焉；	- it is thus that the scholar holds possession of himself.

故民不失望焉。	- it is thus that the expectations of the people from him are not disappointed.
古之人，	When the men of antiquity
得志，	realized their wishes,
泽加于民；	benefits were conferred by them on the people.
不得志，	If they did not realize their wishes,
修身见于世。	they cultivated their personal character, and became illustrious in the world.
穷则独善其身，	If poor, they attended to their own virtue in solitude;
达则兼善天下。”	if advanced to dignity, they made the whole kingdom virtuous as well.'
