顏回曰：	Yan Hui said,
「吾无以進矣，	'I can go no farther;
敢問其方。」	I venture to ask the method from you.'
仲尼曰：	Zhongni replied,
「齋，	'It is fasting,
吾將語若！	(as) I will tell you.
有而為之，	(But) when you have the method,
其易邪？	will you find it easy to practise it?
易之者，	He who thinks it easy
皞天不宜。」	will be disapproved of by the bright Heaven.'
顏回曰：	Hui said,
「回之家貧，	'My family is poor.
唯不飲酒、不茹葷者數月矣。	For months together we have no spirituous drink, nor do we taste the proscribed food or any strong-smelling vegetables;
若此，則可以為齋乎？」	-- can this be regarded as fasting?'
曰：	The reply was,
「是祭祀之齋，	'It is the fasting appropriate to sacrificing,
非心齋也。」	but it is not the fasting of the mind.'
回曰：「敢問心齋。」	I venture to ask what that fasting of the mind is,' said Hui,
仲尼曰：	and Zhongni answered,
「若一志，	'Maintain a perfect unity in every movement of your will,
无聽之以耳而聽之以心，	You will not wait for the hearing of your ears about it, but for the hearing of your mind.
无聽之以心而聽之以氣。	You will not wait even for the hearing of your mind, but for the hearing of the spirit.
聽止於耳，	Let the hearing (of the ears) rest with the ears.
心止於符。	Let the mind rest in the verification (of the rightness of what is in the will).
氣也者，虛而待物者也。	But the spirit is free from all pre-occupation and so waits for (the appearance of) things.
唯道集虛。	Where the (proper) course is, there is freedom from all pre-occupation;
虛者，心齋也。」	such freedom is the fasting of the mind.'
顏回曰：	Hui said,
「回之未始得使，	'Before it was possible for me to employ (this method),
實自回也；	there I was, the Hui that I am;
得使之也，	now, that I can employ it,
未始有回也。	the Hui that I was has passed away.
可謂虛乎？	Can I be said to have obtained this freedom from pre-occupation?
夫子曰：「盡矣。	The Master replied, 'Entirely.
吾語若！	I tell you
若能入遊其樊而无感其名，	that you can enter and be at ease in the enclosure (where he is), and not come into collision with the reputation (which belongs to him).
入則鳴，	If he listen to your counsels, let him hear your notes;
不入則止。	if he will not listen, be silent.
无門无毒，	Open no (other) door; employ no other medicine;
一宅而寓於不得已，	dwell with him (as with a friend) in the same apartment, and as if you had no other option,
則幾矣。	and you will not be far from success in your object.
絕迹易，无行地難。	Not to move a step is easy; to walk without treading on the ground is difficult.
為人使，易以偽；為天使，難以偽。	In acting after the manner of men, it is easy to fall into hypocrisy; in acting after the manner of Heaven, it is difficult to play the hypocrite.
聞以有翼飛者矣，	I have heard of flying with wings;
未聞以无翼飛者也；	I have not heard of flying without them.
聞以有知知者矣，	I have heard of the knowledge of the wise;
未聞以无知知者也。	I have not heard of the knowledge of the unwise.
瞻彼闋者，	Look at that aperture (left in the wall);
虛室生白，	the empty apartment is filled with light through it.
吉祥止止。	Felicitous influences rest (in the mind thus emblemed), as in their proper resting place.
夫且不止，	Even when they do not so rest,
是之謂坐馳。	we have what is called (the body) seated and (the mind) galloping abroad.
夫徇耳目內通而外於心知，	The information that comes through the ears and eyes is comprehended internally, and the knowledge of the mind becomes something external:
鬼神將來舍，	(when this is the case), the spiritual intelligences will come, and take up their dwelling with us,
而況人乎！	and how much more will other men do so!
是萬物之化也，	All things thus undergo a transforming influence.
禹、舜之所紐也，	This was the hinge on which Yu and Shun moved;
伏戲、几蘧之所行終，	it was this which Fu-xi and Ji-qu practised all their lives:
而況散焉者乎！」	how much more should other men follow the same rule!'
