古之人在混芒之中，	The men of old, while the chaotic condition was yet undeveloped,
與一世而得澹漠焉。	shared the placid tranquillity which belonged to the whole world.
當是時也，	At that time
陰陽和靜，	the Yin and Yang were harmonious and still;
鬼神不擾，	their resting and movement proceeded without any disturbance;
四時得節，	the four seasons had their definite times;
萬物不傷，	not a single thing received any injury,
群生不夭，	and no living being came to a premature end.
人雖有知，	Men might be possessed of (the faculty of) knowledge,
無所用之，	but they had no occasion for its use.
此之謂至一。	This was what is called the state of Perfect Unity.
當是時也，	At this time,
莫之為而常自然。	there was no action on the part of any one, but a constant manifestation of spontaneity.
