生而美者，	When (the sage) is born with all his excellence,
人与之鉴，	it is other men who see it for him.
不告则不知其美于人也。	If they did not tell him, he would not know that he was more excellent than others.
若知之，	And when he knows it,
若不知之，	he is as if he did not know it;
若闻之，	when he hears it,
若不闻之，	he is as if he did not hear it.
其可喜也终无已，	His source of joy in it has no end,
人之好之亦无已，	and men's admiration of him has no end
性也。	- all this takes place naturally.
圣人之爱人也，	The love of the sage for others
人与之名，	receives its name from them.
不告则不知其爱人也。	If they did not tell him of it, he would not know that he loved them;
若知之，	and when he knows it,
若不知之，	he is as if he knew it not;
若闻之，	when he hears it,
若不闻之，	he is as if he heard it not.
其爱人也终无已，	His love of others never has an end,
人之安之亦无已，	and their rest in him has also no end:
性也。	all this takes place naturally.
