子夏When Zi-xia was introduced (to the Master) after he had put off the mourning (for his parents),
a lute was given to him.
He tried to tune it, but could hardly do so;
he touched it, but brought no melody from it.
He rose up and said,
'I have not yet forgotten my grief.
The ancient kings framed the rules of ceremony,
。」 and I dare not go beyond them?'
子張 When a lute was given to Zi-zhang in the same circumstances,
he tried to tune it, and easily did so;
he touched it, and brought melody from it.
He rose up and said,
。」'The ancient kings framed the rules of ceremony, and I do not dare not to come up to them.'
