子夏既除喪而見，	When Zi-xia was introduced (to the Master) after he had put off the mourning (for his parents),
予之琴，	a lute was given to him.
和之不和，	He tried to tune it, but could hardly do so;
彈之而不成聲。	he touched it, but brought no melody from it.
作而曰：	He rose up and said,
「哀未忘也。	'I have not yet forgotten my grief.
先王制禮，	The ancient kings framed the rules of ceremony,
而弗敢過也。」	and I dare not go beyond them?'
子張既除喪而見，予之琴，	When a lute was given to Zi-zhang in the same circumstances,
和之而和，	he tried to tune it, and easily did so;
彈之而成聲，	he touched it, and brought melody from it.
作而曰：	He rose up and said,
「先王制禮不敢不至焉。」	'The ancient kings framed the rules of ceremony, and I do not dare not to come up to them.'
