齊人伐燕，The people of Qi attacked Yan,
勝之。 and conquered it.
宣王問曰：The king Xuan asked, saying,
「或謂寡人勿取， 'Some tell me not to take possession of it for myself,
或謂寡人取之。 and some tell me to take possession of it.
以萬乘之國伐萬乘之國，For a kingdom of ten thousand chariots, attacking another of ten thousand chariots,
五旬而舉之， to complete the conquest of it in fifty days,
人力不至於此。 is an achievement beyond mere human strength.
不取， If I do not take possession of it,
必有天殃。 calamities from Heaven will surely come upon me.
取之，何如？What do you say to my taking possession of it?
