誕寘之隘巷、He was placed in a narrow lane,
牛羊腓字之。But the sheep and oxen protected him with loving care.
誕寘之平林、He was placed in a wide forest,
會伐平林。Where he was met with by the wood-cutters.
誕寘之寒冰、He was placed on the cold ice,
鳥覆翼之。And a bird screened and supported him with its wings.
鳥乃去矣、When the bird went away,
后稷呱矣、Hou-ji began to wail.
實覃實訏、His cry was long and loud,
厥聲載路。So that his voice filled the whole way.
