儒家 -> 孟子 -> 盡心下 -> 70

孟子曰：Mencius said,
「口之於味也， 'For the mouth to desire sweet tastes,
目之於色也， the eye to desire beautiful colours,
耳之於聲也， the ear to desire pleasant sounds,
鼻之於臭也， the nose to desire fragrant odours,
四肢之於安佚也， and the four limbs to desire ease and rest
性也，- these things are natural.
有命焉， But there is the appointment of Heaven in connexion with them,
君子不謂性也。and the superior man does not say of his pursuit of them, "It is my nature."
仁之於父子也， The exercise of love between father and son,
義之於君臣也， the observance of righteousness between sovereign and minister,
禮之於賓主也， the rules of ceremony between guest and host,
智之於賢者也， the display of knowledge in recognising the talented,
聖人之於天道也， and the fulfilling the heavenly course by the sage
命也，- these are the appointment of Heaven.
有性焉， But there is an adaptation of our nature for them.
君子不謂命也。」The superior man does not say, in reference to them, "It is the appointment of Heaven."'
