時厥明，The time was on the morrow,
王乃大巡六師， when the king went round his six hosts in state,
明誓眾士。 and made a clear declaration to all his officers.
王曰： He said,
「嗚呼！ 'Oh !
我西土君子。 my valiant men of the west,
天有顯道， from Heaven are the illustrious courses of duty,
厥類惟彰。 of which the (several) requirements are quite plain.
今商王受，And now Shang, the king of Shang,
狎侮五常， treats with contemptuous slight the five regular (virtues),
荒怠弗敬。 and abandons himself to wild idleness and irreverence.
自絕于天， He has cut himself off from Heaven,
結怨于民。 and brought enmity between himself and the people.
斫朝涉之脛，He cut through the leg-bones of those who were wading, in the morning;
剖賢人之心， he cut out the heart of the worthy man.
作威殺戮，By the use of his power, killing, and murdering,
毒痡四海。 he has poisoned and sickened all within the four seas.
崇信奸回， His honours and confidence are given to the villainous and bad.
放黜師保， He has driven from him his instructors and guardians.
屏棄典刑， He has thrown to the winds the statutes and penal laws.
囚奴正士， He has imprisoned and enslaved the upright officer.
郊社不修， He neglects the sacrifices to heaven and earth.
宗廟不享， He has discontinued the offerings in the ancestral temple.
作奇技淫巧以悅婦人。 He makes contrivances of wonderful device and extraordinary cunning to please his wife.
上帝弗順，祝降時喪。God will no longer indulge him, but with a curse is sending down on him this ruin.
爾其孜孜，奉予一人，恭行天罰。Do ye with untiring zeal support me, the One man, reverently to execute the punishment appointed by Heaven.
古人有言曰： The ancients have said,
『撫我則后， "He who soothes us is our sovereign;
虐我則仇。』 he who oppresses us is our enemy."
獨夫受洪惟作威，This solitary fellow Shou, having exercised great tyranny,
乃汝世仇。 is your perpetual enemy.
樹德務滋，(It is said again), "In planting (a man's) virtue, strive to make it great;
除惡務本，in putting away (a man's) wickedness, strive to do it from the roots."
肆予小子誕以爾眾士，Here I, the little child, by the powerful help of you, all my officers,
殄殲乃仇。 will utterly exterminate your enemy.
爾眾士其尚迪果毅，以登乃辟。Do you, all my officers, march forward with determined boldness to sustain your prince.
功多有厚賞，Where there is much merit, there shall be large reward;
不迪有顯戮。where you do not so advance, there shall be conspicuous disgrace.
