然則何以至期也？This being the case, how is it that (in certain cases the mourning lasts) only for a year?
曰：The answer is,
至親以期斷。that in the case of the nearest kindred, there is a break in it at the end of a year.
是何也？How is that?
曰： The answer is
天地則已易矣，- The interaction of heaven and earth has run its round;
四時則已變矣， and the four seasons have gone through their changes.
其在天地之中者，All things between heaven and earth
莫不更始焉， begin their processes anew.
以是象之也。 The rules of mourning are intended to resemble this.
然則何以三年也？Then how is it that there are three years' mourning (for a parent)?
曰： The answer is
加隆焉爾也，- From the wish to make it greater and more impressive,
焉使倍之， the time is doubled,
故再期也。 and so embraces two round years.
由九月以下何也？What about the mourning for nine months' and the shorter periods?
曰：焉使弗及也。The answer is - It is to prevent such mourning from reaching (the longer periods).
