Font test page

Character typeReferenceYour browser
Traditional Chinese義、禮、說、選
Simplified Chinese义、礼、说、选
CJK Extension A㡛、㬐、㖧、䵍
CJK Extension B𣚣、䶅、𪘆、𦞕
CJK Extension C𪢨、𪪖、𫔺、𫜴
CJK Extension D𫝀、𫞂、𫝻、𫠝

The above table gives two representations of 24 different Chinese characters: the 'Reference' column contains a bitmap image of the characters, while the 'Your browser' column shows how your system renders the same characters when they appear in Chinese text. Hence on a properly configured system with appropriate fonts, these two columns should contain the same characters. If you see squares or blank spaces in the 'Your browser' column, your system does not support these characters; you will need to download and install a suitable font such as "Hanazono" for these to display.

Browser setup

Font display has been tested successfully on Windows XP with Firefox, IE (1), and Opera (2), and on Mac OS X version 10.6 with Safari and Firefox.

Basic CJKExtension B
Firefox 2.0yesyes
Internet Explorer 6.0yesyes (1)
Opera 9.24yesyes (2)

Firefox

Firefox fully supports Unicode and Chinese fonts and does not require any modifications or updates to use them.

Internet Explorer 6

1. Internet Explorer 6 requires the following registry update to display Extension B characters:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International\Scripts\42]
IEFixedFontName=[Surrogate Font Face Name]
IEPropFontName=[Surrogate Font Face Name]

You can add this manually using the Windows Regedit program, or by downloading and double-clicking on cjkup.reg. (You will need to edit the file if using a font other than Han Nom.)

Opera

2. Opera requires the following registry update to display Extension B characters:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\LanguagePack\SurrogateFallback]
Plane2=[Surrogate Font Face name]

You can add this manually using the Windows Regedit program, or by downloading and double-clicking on cjkup.reg. (You will need to edit the file if using a font other than Han Nom.)

Other platforms

Other operating systems such as Linux, and other web browsers will work provided that they fully support Unicode (and UTF-8). Please post a message on the forums if you know of any useful setup advice for people using these platforms.
