進士張生,善鼓琴,好讀孟軻書。下第遊蒲關。入舜城。日將暮,乃排闥聳轡爭進,因而馬蹶。頃之馬斃。生無所投足。遂詣廟吏,求止一夕。吏指簷廡下曰。捨此無所詣矣。遂止。初夜方寢。見絳衣者二人。前言曰。帝召書生。生遽往,帝問曰。業何道藝之人。生對曰。臣儒家子,常習孔孟書。帝曰。孔聖人也,朕知久矣。孟是何人。得與孔同科而語。生曰。孟亦傳聖人意也。祖尚仁義,設禮樂而施教化。帝曰。著書乎。生曰。著書七千二百章,盖與孔門之徒難疑答問,及魯論齊論。俱善言也。帝曰。記其文乎。曰。非獨曉其文,抑亦深其義。帝乃令生朗念,傾耳聽之。念《萬章問》。舜往於田,號泣於旻天。何為其號泣也。《孟子》曰。怨慕也。萬章問曰。父母愛之,喜而不忘;父母惡之,勞而不怨。然則舜怨乎。答曰。長息問於公明高曰,舜往於田,則吾得聞命矣。號泣於旻天,怨於父母,則吾不知也。帝止生之詞,憮然嘆曰。盖有不知而作之者,亦此之謂矣。朕捨天下千八百二十載,暴秦竊位,毒痛四海,焚我典籍,泯我帝圖,蒙蔽群言,逞恣私欲。百代之後,經史差謬。辭意相及,鄰於詼諧。常聞賛唐堯之美曰。垂衣裳而天下理。盖明無事也。然則平章百姓,協和萬邦,至於滔天懷山襄陵。下民其咨,夫如是則與垂衣之義乖矣。亦聞賛朕之美曰。無為而治。乃載於典則云。賓四門,齊七政,類上帝,禋六宗,望山川。徧群神。流共工。放驩兜。殛鯀,竄三苗。夫如是與無為之道遠矣。今又聞號泣于旻天。怨慕也,非朕之所行。夫莫之為而為之者天也。莫之致而致之者命也。朕泣者,怨己之命,不合於父母,而訴於旻天也。何萬章之問,孟軻不知其對。傳聖人之意,豈宜如是乎。嗟不能已,久之謂生曰。學琴乎。曰。嗜之而不善。帝乃顧左右取琴,曰。不聞鼓五絃,歌《南風》,奚足以光其歸路。乃撫琴以歌之曰。南風薰薰兮草芊芊,妙有之音兮歸清絃。蕩蕩之教兮由自然,熙熙之化兮吾道全。薰薰兮思何傳。歌訖。鼓琴為南風弄。音韻清暢。爽朗心骨,生因發言曰。妙哉。乃遂驚悟。出《纂異記》。明鈔本作出《原化記》
