隋文帝置左右宗卫，其官制如左右卫，各掌以皇族侍卫。炀帝改为左右武侍率。大唐复为左右宗卫率府。龙朔二年，改为左右司御卫，后改卫为率府焉。神龙初，复为宗卫。景云二年，复为司御率府，置率各一人，所掌与左右卫率同。副率以下职亦同，他准此。副率各二人，长史、录事及仓、兵、胄曹参军各一人。
