1 古之善為士者,微妙玄通,深不可識。夫唯不可識,故強為之容:豫兮,若冬涉川;猶兮,若畏四鄰;儼兮,其若客;渙兮,若冰之將釋;敦兮,其若樸;曠兮,其若谷;渾兮,其若濁。孰能濁以澄靜之,徐清?孰能安以久動之,徐生?保此道者不欲盈,故能敝不新成。
2 太上前章言道體,此言體道之人。人與道,是二而一也。道無可見,因人可見。人何能仙?以道而仙。道者何?真一之氣也。真一之氣,即《中庸》之德也。欲修大道,豈有他哉?文王小心翼翼昭事上帝,孔子足縮縮如有循。道之為道,不過一敬焉耳。人能以敬居心,一念不苟,一事不輕,大道不即在此乎?雖然,道無奇怪,尤賴有體道者存乎其間,斯道乃不虛懸於天壤。故太上云:古之善為士者,其為物不二,則其生物不測。何至至微而至妙乎?「寂然不動,感而遂通。」何其至玄而至通乎?顧其心之浩浩,氣之洋洋,不啻江河之深,令人無從測識。故太上曰「夫惟不識,故強為之容」。以明其內之真不可得而測,其外之容有可強而形焉。其心心慎獨,在在存誠,如豫之渡河,必俟冰凝而後渡;若猶之夜行,必待風靜而後行,最小心也。其整齊嚴肅,亦如顯客之遙臨,不敢稍慢;其脫然無所累,夷然無可系,又似冰釋為水,杳無形跡可尋;其忠厚存心,仁慈待物,渾如太樸完全,雕琢不事,而渾然無間;其休休有容,謙謙自抑,何異深山窮谷,虛而無物,大而能容耶?其形如此,其性可知。要皆渾天載於無聲,順帝之則而不識。宛若舜居深山,了無異於深山野人者。其渾噩之風,豈昏濁者所得而擬乎?但渾與濁相肖,聖與凡一理,凡人之濁真濁也;聖人之濁,渾若濁也,實則至濁而至清。然聖不自聖,所以為聖;凡不自凡,竟自為凡。孰能於心之染污者而澄之使靜,俟其靜久而清光現焉:孰能於性之本安者而涵泳之、擴充之,迨其養之久久,而生之徐徐,採以為藥,煉以為丹?保生之道,不誠在是乎?此靜以凝神,動以生氣,即守中,即陽生活子時也。由此一升一降,收歸爐內,漸採漸煉,漸煉漸凝,無非一心不二,萬緣皆空,保守此陽而已。有而愈者,虛而愈虛。有至虛之心,無持盈之念,是以能返真一之氣,得真常之道焉。又曰「能敝不新成」者何?蓋以凡事之新成者,其敝必速,茲則敝之無可敝也。敝者其跡,不敝者其神。一真內含,萬靈外著,其微妙玄通,固有如是焉耳。
3 此言體道者之謹慎小心,雖曰道本虛無,而有道高人,自能無形而形,無象而象,若內外一致者然。章內「若」字七句,皆借物以形容道妙,正見微妙玄通,淵深不可測度處。「孰能」以下數句,是言未能成德,而求以入道者。濁不易澄,靜存則心體自潔;安貴於久,動察則神智不窮。滿遭損,故不欲盈也;速易敝,故不新成也。吾願學人虛而有容,樸而無琢,渾渾灝灝,隨在昭誠愨之風,斯人心未有不化為道心、凡氣未有不易為真氣者。切勿以深莫能測,遂逡巡而不前也!
