太常、光禄勋、卫尉、太仆、廷尉、大鸿胪宗正大司农少府将作大匠、太后三卿、大长秋,皆为列卿,各置丞、功曹、主簿、五官等员。

嵇康,字叔夜,谯国銍人也。其先姓奚,会稽上虞人,以避怨,徙焉。銍有嵇山,家于其侧,因而命氏。兄喜,有当世才,历太仆、宗正。康早孤,有奇才,远迈不群。身长七尺八寸,美词气,有风仪,而土木形骸,不自藻饰,人以为龙章凤姿,天质自然。恬静寡欲,含垢匿瑕,宽简有大量。学不师受,博览无不该通,长好《老》《庄》。与魏宗室婚,拜中散大夫。常修养性服食之事,弹琴咏诗,自足于怀。以为神仙禀之自然,非积学所得,至于导养得理,则安期、彭祖之伦可及,乃著《养生论》。又以为君子无私,其论曰:「夫称君子者,心不措乎是非,而行不违乎道者也。何以言之?夫气静神虚者,心不存于矜尚;体亮心达者,情不系于所欲。矜尚不存乎心,故能越名教而任自然;情不系于所欲,故能审贵贱而通物情。物情顺通,故大道无违;越名任心,故是非无措也。是故言君子则以无措为主,以通物为美;言小人则以匿情为非,以违道为阙。何者?匿情矜吝,小人之至恶;虚心无措,君子之笃行也。是以大道言『及吾无身,吾又何患』。无以生为贵者,是贤于贵生也。由斯而言,夫至人之用心,固不存有措矣。故曰『君子行道,忘其为身』,斯言是矣。君子之行贤也,不察于有度而后行也;任心无邪,不议于善而后正也;显情无措,不论于是而后为也。是故傲然忘贤,而贤与度会;忽然任心,而心与善遇;傥然无措,而事与是俱也。」其略如此。盖其胸怀所寄,以高契难期,每思郢质。所与神交者惟陈留阮籍、河内山涛,豫其流者河内向秀、沛国刘伶、籍兄子咸、琅邪王戎,遂为竹林之游,世所谓「竹林七贤」也。戎自言与康居山阳二十年,未尝见其喜愠之色。
