3 | 建本: | 孔子曰:行身有六本,本立焉,然后为君子立体有义矣,而孝为本;处丧有礼矣,而哀为本;战阵有队矣,而勇为本;政治有理矣,而能为本;居国有礼矣,而嗣为本;生才有时矣,而力为本。置本不固,无务丰末;亲戚不悦,无务外交;事无终始,无务多业;闻记不言,无务多谈;比近不说,无务修远。是以反本修迩,君子之道也。天之所生,地之所养,莫贵乎人人之道,莫大乎父子之亲,君臣之义;父道圣,子道仁,君道义,臣道忠。贤父之于子也,慈惠以生之,教诲以成之,养其谊,藏其伪,时其节,慎其施;子年七岁以上,父为之择明师,选良友,勿使见恶,少渐之以善,使之早化。故贤子之事亲,发言陈辞,应对不悖乎耳;趣走进退,容貌不悖乎目;卑体贱身,不悖乎心。君子之事亲以积德,子者亲之本也,无所推而不从命,推而不从命者,惟害亲者也,故亲之所安子皆供之。贤臣之事君也,受官之日,以主为父,以国为家,以士人为兄弟;故苟有可以安国家,利人民者不避其难,不惮其劳,以成其义;故其君亦有助之以遂其德。夫君臣之与百姓,转相为本,如循环无端,夫子亦云,人之行莫大于孝;孝行成于内而嘉号布于外,是谓建之于本而荣华自茂矣。君以臣为本,臣以君为本;父以子为本,子以父为本,弃其本,荣华槁矣。 |

Though there should be tactics in war, courage is fundamental. Though there should be ceremonies for mourning, grief is essential. Though a scholar should be learned, he must first of all exhibit good conduct. When the seeds are not well sown, there is no use in labouring for a good harvest. When the people near-by are not befriended there is no use of endeavouring to attract those at a distance. When one's relatives are not submissive, there is no use in endeavouring to establish contacts with the outside world. When one cannot accomplish a single task from beginning to end. there is no use of attempting many things.
