| Xiang Yin Jiu Yi: | The moon, after three days, completes the period of its dark disk. Three months complete a season. Therefore in this ceremony precedence is thrice yielded to the guest, and in establishing a state three high ministers must be appointed. That the guests are in three divisions, each with its head or leader, indicated the fundamental principles in the administration of government and instruction, and was the third great feature of the ceremony. |

《礼》曰：大明生于东，月生于西，此阴阳之分，夫妇之位也。 又曰：天秉阳，垂日星，秉犹持也，言天持阳气，施生照下土也。地秉阴，窍于山川，播五行于四时，和而后月生也，是以三五而盈，三五而阙。窍，孔也。言地持阴气，出内于山川，以舒五行于四时也。此气和乃后月生而上配日若臣，功成进爵位于一，盈也。阙，屈伸之义也。必三五者，播五行于四时，一曰水，二曰火，三曰木，四曰金，五曰土，合为十五之成数也。 又曰：月者三日而成魄，三月而成时，是以礼有三让，建国必立三卿。三宾者，政教之本，礼之大参也。言礼者，阴也。大数取法于月也。 又曰：天子与后，犹日之与月，阳之与阴，相须而后成。 又曰：秋分之日，祀夕月于西郊。 又曰：祭日于坛，祭月于坎，以别幽明，以制上下。幽明者谓日照昼，月照夜。 又曰：太阴之精，上为月。月者，天地之阴，金之精也。 |
