54 道德经:
善建不拔,善抱者不脱,子孙以祭祀不辍。修之于身,其德乃真;修之于家,其德乃馀;修之于乡,其德乃长;修之于国,其德乃丰;修之于天下,其德乃普。故以身观身,以家观家,以乡观乡,以国观国,以天下观天下。吾何以知天下然哉?以此。
Dao De Jing:
(The cultivation (of the Dao), and the observation (of its effects))
What (Dao's) skilful planter plants
Can never be uptorn;
What his skilful arms enfold,
From him can never be borne.
Sons shall bring in lengthening line,
Sacrifices to his shrine.

Dao when nursed within one's self,
His vigour will make true;
And where the family it rules
What riches will accrue!
The neighbourhood where it prevails
In thriving will abound;
And when 'tis seen throughout the state,
Good fortune will be found.
Employ it the kingdom o'er,
And men thrive all around.

In this way the effect will be seen in the person, by the observation of different cases; in the family; in the neighbourhood; in the state; and in the kingdom.
How do I know that this effect is sure to hold thus all under the sky? By this (method of observation).

老子曰:以不义得之,又不布施,患及其身,不能为人,又无以自为,可谓愚人,无以异于枭爱其子也,故“持而备之,不如其已,揣而锐之,不可长保。”德之中有道,道之中有德,其化不可极,阳中有阴,阴中有阳,万事尽然,不可胜明。福至祥存,祸至祥先,见祥而不为善,则福不来,见不祥而行善,则祸不至,利与害同门,祸与福同邻,非神圣人莫之能分,故曰“祸兮福所倚,福兮祸所伏,孰知其极。”人之将疾也,必先甘鱼肉之味,国之将亡也,必先恶忠臣之语,故疾之将死者,不可为良医,国之将亡者,不可为忠谋。修之身,然后可以治民,居家理,治然后可移官长,故曰“修之身,其德乃真,修之家,其德乃有馀,修之国,其德乃丰。”民之所以生活,衣与食也,事周于衣食则有功,不周于衣食则无功,事无功德不长。故随时而不成,无更其刑,顺时而不成,无更其理,时将复起,是谓道纪。帝王富其民,霸王富其地,危国富其吏,治国若不足,亡国囷仓虚,故曰“上无事而民自富,上无为而民自化。”起师十万,日费千金,“帅旋之后,必有凶年,”故“兵者不祥之器,非君子之宝也。”“和大怨必有馀怨”,奈何其为不善也。古者亲近不以言,来远不以言,使近者悦,远者来。与民同欲则和,与民同守则固,与民同念者知,得民力者富,得民誉者显,行有召寇,言有致祸,无先人言,后人已。附耳之语,流闻千里,言者祸也,舌者机也,出言不当,驷马不追。昔者中黄子曰:天有五方,地有五行,声有五音,物有五味,色有五章,人有五位,故天地之间有二十五人也。上五有神人、真人、道人、至人、圣人,次五有德人、贤人、智人、善人、辩人,中五有公人、忠人、信人、义人、礼人,次五有士人、工人、虞人、农人、商人,下五有众人、奴人、愚人、肉人、小人,上五之与下五,犹人之与牛马也。圣人者以目视,以耳听,以口言,以足行。真人者,不视而明,不听而聪,不行而从,不言而公。故圣人所以动天下者,真人未尝过焉,贤人所以矫世俗者,圣人未尝观焉。所谓道者,无前无后,无左无右,万物玄同,无是无非。

善建者不拔,建,立也。善以道立身立国者,不可得引而拔之。善抱者不脱,善以道抱精神者,终不可拔引解脱。子孙祭祀不辍。为人子孙能修道如是,长生不死,世世以久,祭祀先祖,宗庙无绝时。修之于身,其德乃真,修道于身,爱气养神,益寿延年。其德如是,乃为真人。修之于家,其德乃馀,修道于家,父慈子孝,兄友弟顺,夫信妻贞。其德如是,乃有馀庆及于来世子孙。修之于乡,其德乃长,修道于乡,尊敬长老,爱养幼少,教诲愚鄙。其德如是,乃无不覆及也。修之于国,其德乃丰,修道于国,则君信臣忠,仁义自生,礼乐自兴,政平无私。其德如是,乃为丰厚也。修之于天下,其德乃普。人主修道于天下,不言而化,不教而治,下之应上,信如影响。其德如是,乃为普博。故以身观身,以修道之身,观不修道之身,孰亡孰存也。以家观家,以修道之家,观不修道之家。以乡观乡,以修道之乡,观不修道之乡也。以国观国,以修道之国,观不修道之国也。以天下观天下。以修道之主,观不修道之主也。吾何以知天下之然哉,以此。老子言,吾何知天下修道者昌,背道者亡。以此五事观而知之也。
