| Tan Gong I: | The wearing of the sackcloth head-bands and girdles, to express the real (feeling of the heart); the digging a hole in the middle of the apartment (over which) to wash (the corpse); taking down the (tiles of the) furnace, and placing them at the feet (of it); and at the interment pulling down (part of the wall on the west of the door of) the ancestral temple, so as to pass by the upper side (of the altar to the spirit) of the way, and issue by the great gate - these were the practices of the Yin dynasty, and the learners (in the school of Confucius) followed them. |

《家语》曰：孔子在卫，司徒敬子卒，夫子吊焉。主人不哀，夫子哭，不尽声而退。蘧伯玉谓孔子曰：“卫国鄙俗，不习丧礼，烦吾子辱相焉。”孔子许之。掘中溜而浴，中溜，室中。毁灶以缀足，袭尸于床。及葬，毁宗葛行，明不复有事于此。缀足，欲令不解戾也。毁宗庙之门，西而出行。神之位在庙门之外。出于大门。及墓，男子西面，妇人东面。既封，而归，殷道也。孔子行之。子游问曰：“君子行礼，不求变俗，夫子变之矣。”孔子曰：“非此之谓也。丧事则从其质而已矣。” 又曰：孔子之丧，公西赤掌葬焉。含以蔬米三具，蔬米，粳米也。《礼记》曰“嘉蔬”。袭衣十有一，称加朝服一，冠章甫之冠，佩象环，径五寸，而綦组绶。綦，杂色也。桐棺四寸，柏椁五寸，饰桐疒啬，置翣、设披，周也；设崇，殷也；绸练、设旐，夏也。按柩行夹，引棺者也。崇牙，旌旗节也。绸练，旌旗之□葬乘车所建也。旌旗之旒，縿缁布广充幅长寻曰旐也。兼用三王之礼，所以尊师，且备古也。 |
