67 道德经:
天下皆谓我道大,似不肖。夫唯大,故似不肖。若肖久矣。其细也夫!我有三宝,持而保之。一曰慈,二曰俭,三曰不敢为天下先。慈故能勇;俭故能广;不敢为天下先,故能成器长。今舍慈且勇;舍俭且广;舍后且先;死矣!夫慈以战则胜,以守则固。天将救之,以慈卫之。
Dao De Jing:
(Three precious things)
All the world says that, while my Dao is great, it yet appears to be inferior (to other systems of teaching).
Now it is just its greatness that makes it seem to be inferior. If it were like any other (system), for long would its smallness have been known!
But I have three precious things which I prize and hold fast. The first is gentleness; the second is economy; and the third is shrinking from taking precedence of others.
With that gentleness I can be bold; with that economy I can be liberal; shrinking from taking precedence of others, I can become a vessel of the highest honour. Now-a-days they give up gentleness and are all for being bold; economy, and are all for being liberal; the hindmost place, and seek only to be foremost; - (of all which the end is) death.
Gentleness is sure to be victorious even in battle, and firmly to maintain its ground. Heaven will save its possessor, by his (very) gentleness protecting him.

天下皆谓我道大,似不肖。老子言:天下谓我德大,我则佯愚似不肖。夫唯大,故似不肖,唯独名德大者为身害,故佯愚似若不肖。无所分别,无所割截,不贱人而自责。若肖久矣。肖,善也。谓辨惠也。若大辨惠之人,身高自贵行察察之政所从来久矣。其细也夫。言辨惠者唯如小人,非长者。我有三宝,持而保之。老子言:我有三宝,抱持而保倚。一曰慈,爱百姓若赤子。二曰俭,赋敛若取之于己也。三曰不敢为天下先。执谦退,不为倡始也。慈故能勇,以慈仁,故能勇于忠孝也。俭故能广,天子身能节俭,故民日用广矣。不敢为天下先,不为天下首先。故能成器长。成器长,谓得道人也。我能为得道人之长也。今舍慈且勇,今世人舍慈仁,但为勇武。舍俭且广,舍其俭约,但为奢泰。舍后且先,舍其后己,但为人先。死矣!所行如此,动入死地。夫慈以战则胜,以守则固。夫慈仁者,百姓亲附,并心一意,故以战则胜敌,以守卫则坚固。天将救之,以慈卫之。天将救助善人,必与慈仁之性,使能自营助也。

凡物之有形者易裁也,易割也。何以论之?有形则有短长,有短长则有小大,有小大则有方圆,有方圆则有坚脆,有坚脆则有轻重,有轻重则有白黑。短长、大小、方圆、坚脆、轻重、白黑之谓理。理定而物易割也。故议于大庭而后言则立,权议之士知之矣。故欲成方圆而随其规矩,则万事之功形矣。而万物莫不有规矩。议言之士,计会规矩也。圣人尽随于万物之规矩,故曰:“不敢为天下先。”不敢为天下先则事无不事,功无不功,而议必盖世,欲无处大官,其可得乎?处大官之谓为成事长,是以故曰:“不敢为天下先,故能为成事长。”

我有三宝,持而保之,老子言,我有三宝,抱持而保倚之。一曰慈,爱百姓若赤子。二曰俭,赋敛若取之于己。三曰不敢为天下先,执谦退,不为唱也。慈,故能勇,以慈仁,故能勇于忠孝。俭,故能广,身能节俭,故民日用宽广也。不敢为天下先,故能成器长,成器长,谓得道人也。我能为道人之长也。今舍慈且勇,今世人舍慈仁,但为勇武。舍俭且广,舍其俭约,但为奢泰。舍后且先,舍其后己,但为人先。死矣。所行如此,动入死道。夫慈,以战则胜,以守则固,夫慈仁者,百姓亲附,故战则胜敌,以守卫则坚固也。用兵有言,陈用兵之道,老子疾时用兵,故托己设其义也。吾不敢为主,主,先也。不敢先举兵也。而为客,客者,和而不唱,用兵当承天而后动也。不敢进寸而退尺,侵人境界,利人财宝为进,闭门守城为退也。祸莫大于轻敌,夫祸乱之害,莫大于欺轻敌家,侵取不休,轻战贪财也。轻敌几丧吾宝,几,近也。宝,身也。欺轻敌家,近丧身也。故抗兵相加,哀者胜矣。哀者慈仁士卒,不远于死也。
