5 论死:
天地之性,能更生火,不能使灭火复燃;能更生人,不能令死人复见。能使灭灰更为燃火,吾乃颇疑死人能复为形。案火灭不能复燃以况之,死人不能复为鬼,明矣。夫为鬼者,人谓死人之精神。如审鬼者、死人之精神,则人见之,宜徒见裸袒之形,无为见衣带被服也。何则?衣服无精神,人死,与形体俱朽,何以得贯穿之乎?精神本以血气为主,血气常附形体。形体虽朽,精神尚在,能为鬼可也。今衣服、丝絮布帛也,生时血气不附著,而亦自无血气,败朽遂已,与形体等,安能自若为衣服之形?由此言之,见鬼衣服象之,则形体亦象之矣。象之,则知非死人之精神也。

夫祭者、供食鬼也;鬼者、死人之精也。若非死人之精,人未尝见鬼之饮食也。推生事死,推人事鬼,见生人有饮食,死为鬼当能复饮食,感物思亲,故祭祀也。及他神百鬼之祠,虽非死人,其事之礼,亦与死人同。盖以不见其形,但以生人之礼准况之也。生人饮食无日,鬼神何故有日?如鬼神审有知,与人无异,则祭不宜择日。如无知也,不能饮食,虽择日避忌,其何补益?
