老子曰:夫人从欲失性,动未尝正也,以治国则乱,以治身则秽,故不闻道者,无以反其性,不通物者,不能清静。原人之性无邪秽,久湛于物即易,易而忘其本即合于其若性。水之性欲清,沙石秽之;人之性欲平,嗜欲害之,唯圣人能遗物反己。是故圣人不以智役物,不以欲滑和,其为乐不忻忻,其于忧不惋惋,是以高而不危,安而不倾。故听善言便计,虽愚者知说之;称圣德高行,虽不肖者知慕之;说之者众而用之者寡,慕之者多而行之者少,所以然者,掔于物而系于俗。故曰:我无为而民自化,我无事而民自富,我好静而民自正,我无欲而民自朴。清静者德之至也,柔弱者道之用也,虚无恬无形大,有形细,无形多,有形少,无形强,有形弱,无形实,有形虚。有形者遂事也,无形者作始也,遂事者成器也,作始者朴也。有形则有声,无形则无声,有形产于无形,故无形者有形之始也。广厚有名,有名者贵全也;俭薄无名,无名者贱轻也;殷富有名,有名尊宠也;贫寡无名,无名卑弱也;雄牡有名,有名者章明也;雌牝无名,无名者隐约也;有馀者有名,有名者高贤也;不足者无名,无名者任下也。有功即有名,无功即无名,有名产于无名,无名者有名之母也,天之道有无相生也,难易相成也。是以圣人执道,虚静微妙以成其德,故有道即有德,有德即有功,有功即有名,有名即复于道,功名长久,终身无咎,王公有功名,孤寡无功名,故曰圣人自谓孤寡,归其根本。功成而不有,故有功以为利,无名以为用。古民童蒙,不知东西,貌不离情,言不出行,行出无容,言而不文,其衣致,神德不全于身者,不知何远之能坏,欲害之心忘乎中者,即饥虎可尾也,而况于人?体道者佚而不穷,任数者劳而无功,夫法刻刑诛者,非帝王之业也,棰策繁用者,非致远之御也,好憎繁多,祸乃相随,故先王之法非所作也,所因也,其禁诛非所为也,所守也,故能因则大,作即细,能守则固,为即败。夫任耳目以听视者,劳心而不明,以智虑为治者,苦心而无功,任一人之材,难以至治,一人之能,不足以治三亩。循道理之数,因天地之然,即六合不足均也,听失于非誉,目淫于彩女,礼亶不足以放爱,诚心可以怀远,故兵莫憯乎志,镆铮为下寇,莫大于阴阳,而枹鼓为细,所谓大寇伏尸不言节,中寇藏于山,小寇遯于民间。故曰民多智能,奇物滋起,法令滋章,盗贼多有去彼取此,天殃不起。故以智治国,国之贼,不以智治国,国之德,愉者万物之祖也,三者行则沦于无形。无形者,一之谓也,一者,无心合于天下也。布德不溉,用之不勤,视之不见,听之不闻,无形而有形生焉,无声而五音鸣焉,无味而五味形焉,无色而五色成焉,故有生于无,实生于虚。音之数不过五,五音之变不可胜听也,味之数不过五,五味之变不可胜尝也,色之数不过五,五色之变不可胜观也。音者宫立而五音形矣,味者甘立而五味定矣,色者白立而五色成矣,道者一立而万物生矣。故一之理,施于四海,一之嘏,察于天地,其全也、敦兮其若朴,其散也、浑兮其若浊,浊而徐清,冲而徐盈,澹然若大海,汜兮若浮云,若无而有,若亡而存。

凡战者,以正合,以奇胜。故善出奇者,无穷如天地,不竭如江河,终而复始,日月是也;死而复生,四时是也。声不过五,五声之变,不可胜听也。色不过五,五色之变,不可胜观也。味不过五,五味之变,不可胜尝也。战势不过奇正,奇正之变,不可胜穷也。奇正相生,如循环之无端,孰能穷之哉!
Energy:
In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory. Indirect tactics, efficiently applied, are inexhaustible as Heaven and Earth, unending as the flow of rivers and streams; like the sun and moon, they end but to begin anew; like the four seasons, they pass away to return once more. There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colors (blue, yellow, red, white, and black), yet in combination they produce more hues than can ever been seen. There are not more than five cardinal tastes (sour, acrid, salt, sweet, bitter), yet combinations of them yield more flavors than can ever be tasted. In battle, there are not more than two methods of attack - the direct and the indirect; yet these two in combination give rise to an endless series of maneuvers. The direct and the indirect lead on to each other in turn. It is like moving in a circle - you never come to an end. Who can exhaust the possibilities of their combination?
