夫战胜攻取,而不修其攻者凶,命曰费留。故曰:明主虑之,良将修之,非利不动,非得不用,非危不战。主不可以怒而兴师,将不可以愠而致战;合于利而动,不合于利而止。怒可以复喜,愠可以复悦,亡国不可以复存,死者不可以复生。故明君慎之,良将警之,此安国全军之道也。
The Attack by Fire:
Unhappy is the fate of one who tries to win his battles and succeed in his attacks without cultivating the spirit of enterprise; for the result is waste of time and general stagnation. Hence the saying: The enlightened ruler lays his plans well ahead; the good general cultivates his resources. Move not unless you see an advantage; use not your troops unless there is something to be gained; fight not unless the position is critical. No ruler should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no general should fight a battle simply out of pique. If it is to your advantage, make a forward move; if not, stay where you are. Anger may in time change to gladness; vexation may be succeeded by content. But a kingdom that has once been destroyed can never come again into being; nor can the dead ever be brought back to life. Hence the enlightened ruler is heedful, and the good general full of caution. This is the way to keep a country at peace and an army intact.

应侯惭而退,以言于王。王曰:“微白起,吾不能灭照相乎?”复益发军,更使王齕代王陵伐赵。围邯郸八、九月,死伤者众,而弗下。赵王出轻锐以寇其后,秦数不利。武安君曰:“不听臣计,今果何如?”王闻之怒,因见武安君,强起之,曰:“君虽病强为寡人卧而将之。有功,寡人之愿,将加重于君。如君不行,寡人恨君。”武安君顿首曰:“臣知行虽无功,得免于罪。虽不行无罪,不免于诛。然惟愿大王览臣愚计释赵养民,以诸侯之变。抚其恐惧,伐其骄慢,诛灭无道,以令诸侯,天下可定,何必以赵为先乎?此所谓为一臣屈而胜天下也。大王若不察臣愚计,必欲快心于赵,以致臣罪,此亦所谓胜一臣而为天下屈者也。夫胜一臣之罨焉,孰若胜天下之威大耶?臣闻主爱其国,忠臣爱其名。破国不可复完,死卒不可复生。臣宁伏受重诛而死,不忍为辱军之将。愿大王察之。”王不答而去。

《孙子》曰:将者,智信仁勇严也。故知兵之术,人之司命,国家安民之主也。将者,国辅。辅周,则国必强;将周密谋不泄也。辅隙,则国必弱。
又曰:故君之所以患于军者三。三者何也?曰:不知军之不可进而谓之进,不知军之不可退而谓之退,是谓縻军;縻,御。不知军中之事而同军中之政,则军士惑也;不知三军之任权而欲同三军之任,则军事覆疑。不得其人也。三军既惑且疑,则诸侯之难至矣,是谓乱军而引胜;引,夺也。故知胜有五:知可以战与不可以战者胜;识众寡之用者胜;上下同欲者胜;以虞待不虞者胜;将能而君不御者胜。司马法曰:进退惟时,无白寡人。此五者,知胜之道。此上五事。故曰:知彼知己,百战不殆。不知彼而知己,一胜一负;不知彼不知己,每战必殆。
又曰:凡用兵之法,将受命于君,合军聚众,汜地无舍,无所依也。衢地合交,结诸侯也。绝地无留,无久止也。围地无谋,发奇兵也。死地则战。途有所不由,死难之地所不当从也,不得也。军有所不击,军难可击。以地险难,不留之失前利,若得之,又利薄。城有所不攻,城小固粮饶,不可攻也。地有所不争,皆与上同操所以置华费而深入徐州拔十四县。君命有所不受。茍便于事,不茍于君命也。故将通于九变之利者,则知用兵矣。九事之变。将不通于九变之利,虽知地形,不能得地之利矣。
又曰:治人不知五变,虽知五利,不能得人之用矣。下五事也。是故智者之虑必杂于利害,在利思害,在害思利。杂于利而务可信,计敌不能依五地为我害信,务为可信也。杂于害而患可解。并计于害,虽有患可解也。害中杂利,陷之死地而后生也。趣之以利。令自来也。故用兵之法,无恃其不来,恃吾有以待之。安不忘危,常备之也。无恃其不攻吾也,恃吾不可攻。故将有五危:必死可杀,勇无疑也。必生可虏,见利不进将怯弱必生之意,上下犹豫,可急而取。忿速可侮,忿疾之人可忿怒侮而致也。廉洁可辱,廉洁之人可污辱而致必来战。爱人而烦,出必所走,爱人者必倍道兼行救之,则烦劳也。凡此五者,将之过,用兵之灾。覆军救将,必以五危,不可不察也。
又曰:吏强卒弱,曰陷。吏强欲进,卒弱辄陷,败也。大吏怒而不服,遇敌怼而自战,将不知其能,曰崩。大吏小将也,大将怒之,不厌服,忿而赴敌,不量轻重,则必崩坏也。将弱不严,教道不明,吏卒无常,陈兵纵横,曰乱。为将若此,乱之道也。将不能料敌,以少合众,以弱击强,兵无避锋,曰北。兵势若此,必走也。凡此六者,胜败之道,将之至任也。
又曰:明主虑之,良将修之。非利不起,非得不用,非危不战。不得已而用兵主不可以怒而兴军,将不可以愠而合战,合于利而用,不合于利而止。不得以喜怒而用兵。怒不可复喜,愠不可复悦,亡国不可复存,死者不可复生。故曰:明主虑之,良将警之,此安国之道也。

《集仙录》曰:女凡者,陈市上酒妇也。作酒美,有仙人过其家饮酒,即以素书五卷贳酒。凡开视之,乃仙方养性长生之术也。凡私写其要诀,依而修之三年,颜色更少。数岁,贳酒仙人复来,笑谓之曰:“盗道无师,有翅不飞。”女凡随仙人去,不知所之。
又曰:太阳女朱翼得吐纳之道,事绝洞子李修。修著书四十篇,名曰《道源》。常行之道,以柔胜刚,弱制强,如临深履危,御奔乘朽,差之毫厘,丧尔之策,勤而行之,可以长寿。
又曰:太阴女卢金学道未成,当道沽酒,密访其师。会客过,使问客土数为岁,但南三北五东九西北中耳。一还报曰:“客大贤者,至得道人也。我始问一知五矣。”遂问长生之道,得补导之要,蒸丹之方。
又曰:太玄女颛和常曰:“人之处世,一失不可复得,一死不可复生,况寿限之促,非修道不可延也。”遂洗心求道,而得其术。
