越王问范子曰:“春肃,夏寒,秋荣,冬泄,人治使然乎?将道也?”范子曰:“天道三千五百岁,一治一乱,终而复始,如环之无端,此天之常道也。四时易次,寒暑失常,治民然也。故天生万物之时,圣人命之曰春。春不生遂者,故天不重为春。春者,夏之父也。故春生之,夏长之,秋成而杀之,冬受而藏之。春肃而不生者,王德不究也;夏寒而不长者,臣下不奉主命也;秋顺而复荣者,百官刑不断也;冬温而泄者,发府库赏无功也。此所谓四时者,邦之禁也。”越王曰:“寒暑不时,治在于人,可知也。愿闻岁之美恶,谷之贵贱,何以纪之?”范子曰:“夫阴阳错缪,即为恶岁;人生失治,即为乱世。夫一乱一治,天道自然。八谷亦一贱一贵,极而复反。言乱三千岁,必有圣王也。八谷贵贱更相胜。故死凌生者,逆,大贵;生凌死者,顺,大贱。”越王曰:“善。”

越王问于范子曰:“寡人闻人失其魂魄者,死;得其魂魄者,生。物皆有之,将人也?”范子曰:“人有之,万物亦然。天地之间,人最为贵。物之生,谷为贵,以生人,与魂魄无异,可得豫知也。”越王曰:“其善恶可得闻乎?”范子曰:“欲知八谷之贵贱、上下、衰极,必察其魂魄,视其动静,观其所舍,万不失一。”问曰:“何谓魂魄?”对曰:“魂者,橐也;魄者,生气之源也。故神生者,出入无门,上下无根,见所而功自存,故名之曰神。神主生气之精,魂主死气之舍也。魄者主贱,魂者主贵,故当安静而不动。魂者,方盛夏而行,故万物得以自昌。神者,主气之精,主贵而云行,故方盛夏之时不行,即神气槁而不成物矣。故死凌生者,岁大败;生凌死者,岁大美。故观其魂魄,即知岁之善恶矣。”
