| Zhong Yong: | The Master said, "In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself. The way of the superior man may be compared to what takes place in traveling, when to go to a distance we must first traverse the space that is near, and in ascending a height, when we must begin from the lower ground. It is said in the Book of Poetry, "Happy union with wife and children is like the music of lutes and harps. When there is concord among brethren, the harmony is delightful and enduring. Thus may you regulate your family, and enjoy the pleasure of your wife and children." The Master said, "In such a state of things, parents have entire complacence!" |

| 24 | 卷八: | 孔子燕居，子贡摄齐而前曰：“弟子事夫子有年矣，才竭而智罢，振于学问，不能复进，请一休焉。”子曰：“赐也，欲焉休乎？”曰：“赐欲休于事君。”孔子曰：“《诗》云：‘夙夜匪懈，以事一人。’为之若此其不易也，若之何其休也！”曰：“赐休于事父。”孔子曰：“《诗》云：‘孝子不匮，永锡尔类。’为之若此其不易也，如之何其休也！”曰：“赐欲休于事兄弟。”孔子曰：“《诗》云：‘妻子好合，如鼓瑟琴。兄弟既翕，和乐且耽。’为之若此其不易也，如之何其休也！”曰：“赐欲休于耕田。”孔子曰：“《诗》云：‘昼尔于茅，宵尔索綯；亟其乘屋，其始播百谷。’为之若此其不易也，若之何其休也。”子贡曰：“君子亦有休乎？”孔子曰：“阖棺兮乃止播耳，不知其时之易迁兮，此之谓君子所休也。故学而不已，阖棺乃止。”《诗》曰：“日就月将。”言学者也。 |
