五常1者何？谓仁、义、礼、智、信也。仁者，不忍也，施生爱人也；义者，宜也，断决得中也；礼者，履也，履道成文也；智者，知也，独见前闻，不惑于事，见微者也；信者，诚也，专一不移也。故人生而应八卦之体，得五气以为常，仁、义、礼、智、信是也。六情者，何谓也？喜、怒、哀、乐、爱、恶谓六情，所以扶成五性。性所以五，情所以六者何？人本含六律五行气而生，故内有五藏六府，此情性之所由出入也。《乐动声仪》曰：“官有六府，人有五藏。” 1. 常 : Another version reads: "性". 抱经堂丛书本等改为“性”。 |

Yangzi said: Ren is your dwelling; yi is the road; li is your clothing; wisdom is a candle; and trustworthiness is a tally. Live in the dwelling, walk the road, straighten your clothing, use the candle to light your way, and clasp the tally. The junzi is unmoved, but when he acts, he will succeed. |
