(The difficulty of being (rightly) known) My words are very easy to know, and very easy to practise; but there is no one in the world who is able to know and able to practise them. There is an originating and all-comprehending (principle) in my words, and an authoritative law for the things (which I enforce). It is because they do not know these, that men do not know me. They who know me are few, and I am on that account (the more) to be prized. It is thus that the sage wears (a poor garb of) hair cloth, while he carries his (signet of) jade in his bosom. |

12 | 缪称训: | 今夫夜有求,与瞽师并,东方开,斯照矣。动而有益,则损随之。故《易》曰:“剥之不可遂尽也。故受之以复。”积薄为厚,积卑为高,故君子日孳孳以成辉,小人日怏怏以至辱。其消息也,离朱弗能见也。文王闻善如不及,宿不善如不祥。非为日不足也,其忧寻推之也。故《诗》曰:“周虽旧邦,其命维新。”怀情抱质,天弗能杀,地弗能霾也。声扬天地之间,配日月之光,甘乐之者也。苟向善,虽过无怨;苟不向善,虽忠来患。故怨人不如自怨,求诸人不如求诸己得也。声自召也,貌自示也,名自命也,文自官也,无非己者。操锐以刺,操刃以击,何怨乎人?故管子文锦也,虽丑登庙;子产练染也,美而不尊。虚而能满,淡而有味,被褐怀玉者。故两心不可以得一人,一心可以得百人。男子树兰,美而不芳,继子得食,肥而不泽,情不相与往来也。 |
