孟子见梁惠王,王立于沼上,顾鸿雁麋鹿,曰:“贤者亦乐此乎?”
Liang Hui Wang I:
Mencius, another day, saw King Hui of Liang. The king went and stood with him by a pond, and, looking round at the large geese and deer, said, 'Do wise and good princes also find pleasure in these things?'
孟子对曰:“贤者而后乐此,不贤者虽有此,不乐也。《》云:‘经始灵台,经之营之,庶民攻之,不日成之。经始勿亟,庶民子来。王在灵囿,麀鹿攸伏,麀鹿濯濯,白鸟鹤鹤。王在灵沼,于牣鱼跃。’文王以民力为台为沼。而民欢乐之,谓其台曰灵台,谓其沼曰灵沼,乐其有麋鹿鱼鼈。古之人与民偕乐,故能乐也。《汤誓》曰:‘时日害丧?予及女偕亡。’民欲与之偕亡,虽有台池鸟兽,岂能独乐哉?”
Mencius replied, 'Being wise and good, they have pleasure in these things. If they are not wise and good, though they have these things, they do not find pleasure. It is said in the Book of Poetry, "He measured out and commenced his marvellous tower; He measured it out and planned it. The people addressed themselves to it, And in less than a day completed it. When he measured and began it, he said to them - Be not so earnest: But the multitudes came as if they had been his children. The king was in his marvellous park; The does reposed about, The does so sleek and fat: And the white birds came glistening. The king was by his marvellous pond; How full was it of fishes leaping about!" King Wen used the strength of the people to make his tower and his pond, and yet the people rejoiced to do the work, calling the tower "the marvellous tower," calling the pond "the marvellous pond," and rejoicing that he had his large deer, his fishes, and turtles. The ancients caused the people to have pleasure as well as themselves, and therefore they could enjoy it. In the Declaration of Tang it is said, "O sun, when wilt thou expire? We will die together with thee." The people wished for Jie's death, though they should die with him. Although he had towers, ponds, birds, and animals, how could he have pleasure alone?'

》曰:“济济多士,文王以宁。”言辅翼贤正,则身必安也。又曰:“弗识弗知,顺帝之则。”言士民说其德义,则效而象之也。文王志之所在,意之所欲,百姓不爱其死,不惮其劳,从之如集。《》曰:“经始灵台,庶民攻之,不日成之,经始勿亟,庶民子来。”文王有志为台,令近境之民闻之者裹粮而至,问业而作之,日日以众,故弗趋而疾,弗期而成,命其台曰灵台,命其囿曰灵囿,谓其沼曰灵沼,爱敬之至也。《》曰:“王在灵囿,麀鹿攸伏,麀鹿濯濯,白鸟颢颢,王在灵沼,于仞鱼跃。”文王之泽,下被禽兽,洽于鱼鳖,故禽兽鱼鳖攸若攸乐,而况士民乎!

周甘人与晋阎嘉争阎田,晋梁丙,张趯,率阴戎伐颍。王使詹桓伯辞于晋曰:我自夏以后稷,魏,骀,芮,岐,毕,吾西土也。及武王克商,蒲姑,商奄,吾东土也,巴濮,楚邓,吾南土也,肃慎,燕,亳,吾北土也,吾何迩封之有,文武成康之建母弟,以蕃屏周,亦其废队是为,岂如弁髦,而因以敝之,先王居梼杌于四裔,以御螭魅,故允姓之奸,居于瓜州,伯父惠公归自秦,而诱以来,使逼我诸姬,入我郊甸,则戎焉取之,戎有中国,谁之咎也,后稷封殖天下,今戎制之,不亦难乎,伯父图之。我在伯父,犹衣服之有冠冕,木水之有本原,民人之有谋主也。伯父若裂冠毁冕,拔本塞原,专弃谋主,虽戎狄其何有余一人,叔向谓宣子曰,文之伯也,岂能改物,翼戴天子,而加之以共,自文以来,世有衰德,而暴灭宗周,以宣示其侈,诸侯之贰,不亦宜乎,且王辞直,子其图之,宣子说,王有姻丧,使赵成如周吊,且致阎田与襚,反颍俘,王亦使宾滑执甘大夫襄以说于晋,晋人礼而归之。
夏,四月,陈灾,郑裨灶曰,五年,陈将复封,封五十二年而遂亡,子产问其故,对曰,陈,水属也,火,水妃也,而楚所相也,今火出而火陈,逐楚而建陈也,妃以五成,故曰五年,岁五及鹑火,而后陈卒亡,楚克有之,天之道也,故曰五十二年。
晋荀盈如齐逆女,还,六月,卒于戏阳,殡于绛,未葬,晋侯饮酒乐,膳宰屠蒯趋入,请佐公使尊,许之,而遂酌以饮,工曰,女为君耳,将司聪也,辰在子卯,谓之疾日,君彻宴乐,学人舍业,为疾故也,君之卿佐,是谓股肱,股肱或亏,何痛如之,女弗闻而乐,是不聪也,又饮外嬖嬖叔曰,女为君目,将司明也,服以旌礼,礼以行事,事有其物,物有其容,今君之容,非其物也,而女不见,是不明也,亦自饮也,曰,味以行气,气以实志,志以定言,言以出令,臣实司味,二御失官,而君弗命,臣之罪也,公说,彻酒,初,公欲废知氏而立其外嬖,为是悛而止,秋,八月,使荀跞佐下军以说焉。
孟僖子如齐,殷聘礼也。

灵王为章华之台,与伍举升焉,曰:“台美夫!”对曰:“臣闻国君服宠以为美,安民以为乐,听德以为聪,致远以为明。不闻其以土木之崇高、彤镂为美,而以金石匏竹之昌大、嚣庶为乐;不闻其以观大、视侈、淫色以为明,而以察清浊为聪。
“先君庄王为刨居之台,高不过望国氛,大不过容宴豆,木不妨守备,用不烦官府,民不废时务,官不易朝常。问谁宴焉,则宋公、郑伯;问谁相礼,则华元、驷騑;问谁赞事,则陈侯、蔡侯、许南、顿子,其大夫侍之。先君以是除乱克敌,而无恶于诸侯。今君为此台也,国民罢焉,财用尽焉,年谷败焉,百官烦焉,举国留之,数年乃成。愿得诸侯与始升焉,诸侯皆距无有至者。而后使太宰启疆请于鲁侯,惧之以蜀之役,而仅得以来。使富都那竖赞焉,而使长鬣之士相焉,臣不知其美也。
“夫美也者,上下、内外、小大、远近皆无害焉,故曰美。若于目观则美,缩于财用则匮,是聚民利以自封而瘠民也,胡美之为?夫君国者,将民之与处;民实瘠矣,君安得肥?且夫私欲弘侈,则德义鲜少;德义不行,则迩子骚离而远者距违。天子之贵也,唯其以公侯为官正,而以伯子南为师旅。其有美名也,唯其施令德于远近,而小大安之也。若敛民利以成其私欲,使民蒿焉忘其安乐,而有远心,其为恶也甚矣,安用目观?
“故先王之为台榭也,榭不过讲军实,台不过望氛祥。故榭度于大卒之居,台度于临观之高。其所不夺穑地,其为不匮财用,其事不烦官业,其日不废时务。瘠硗之地,于是乎为之;城守之木,于是乎用之;官僚之暇,于是乎临之;四时之隙,于是乎成之。故《周诗》曰:‘经始灵台,经之营之。庶民攻之,不日成之。经始勿亟,庶民子来。王在灵囿,麀鹿攸伏。’夫为台榭,将以教民利也,不知其以匮之也。若君谓此台美而为之正,楚其殆矣!”
