1 孔子闲居:
孔子闲居,子夏侍。子夏曰:“敢问《》云:‘凯弟君子,民之父母’,何如斯可谓民之父母矣?”孔子曰:“夫民之父母乎,必达于礼乐之原,以致五至,而行三无,以横于天下。四方有败,必先知之。此之谓民之父母矣。”
Kongzi Xian Ju:
Confucius being at home at leisure, with Zi-xia by his side, the latter said, 'With reference to the lines in the Book of Poetry (III, ii, ode 8, 1), "The happy and courteous sovereign, is the father and mother of the people;" I beg to ask what the sovereign must be, who can be called "the parent of the people."' Confucius said, 'Ah! the parent of the people! He must have penetrated to the fundamental principles of ceremonies and music, till he has reached the five extreme points to which they conduct, and the three that have no positive existence, and be able to exhibit these all under heaven; and when evil is impending in any part of the kingdom, he must have a foreknowledge of it - such an one is he whom we denominate 'the parent of the people.'

子夏侍坐于孔子,曰:“敢问《》云:‘恺悌君子,民之父母。’何如斯可谓民之父母?”孔子曰:“夫民之父母,必达于礼乐之源,以致五至而行三无,以横于天下。四方有败,必先知之,此之谓民之父母。”子夏曰:“敢问何谓五至?”孔子曰:“志之所至,《》亦至焉;《》之所至,礼亦至焉;礼之所至,乐亦至焉;乐之所至,哀亦至焉。《》、礼相成,哀乐相生,是以正明目而视之,不可得而见;倾耳而听之,不可得而闻。志气塞于天地,行之充于四海。此之谓五至矣。”子夏曰:“敢问何谓三无?”孔子曰:“无声之乐,无体之礼,无服之丧,此之谓三无。”子夏曰:“敢问三无,何诗近之?”孔子曰:“‘夙夜基命宥密’,无声之乐也;‘威仪逮逮,不可选也’,无体之礼也;‘凡民有丧,扶伏救之’,无服之丧也。”子夏曰:“言则美矣、大矣!言尽于此而已乎?”孔子曰:“何谓其然!吾语汝,其义犹有五起焉。”子夏曰:“何如?”孔子曰:“无声之乐,气至不违;无体之礼,威仪迟迟;无服之丧,内恕孔哀;无声之乐,所愿必从;无体之礼,上下和同;无服之丧,施及万邦。既然,而又奉之以三无私而劳天下,此之谓五起。”子夏曰:“何谓三无私?”孔子曰:“天无私覆,地无私载,日月无私照。其在《》曰:‘帝命不违,至于汤齐。汤降不迟,圣敬日跻。昭假迟迟,上帝是祗。’‘帝命式于九围。’是汤之德也。”子夏蹶然而起,负墙而立,曰:“弟子敢不志之?”

开皇元年二月甲子,上自相府常服入宫。备礼即皇帝位于临光殿。设坛于南郊,遣使柴燔告天。是日大赦,改年为开皇。六月癸未,诏以初受天命,赤雀降祥,五德相生,赤为火色。其郊及社庙,依服冕之仪,而朝会之服、旗帜、牺牲,各令尚赤。戎服以黄。秋七月乙卯,上始服黄,百僚毕贺。二年六月丙申,诏曰:“龙首山川原秀丽,卉物滋阜,卜食相土,宜建都邑,定鼎之基永固,无穷之业所在。公私府宅,规模远近,营构资费,随事条奏。”仍诏左仆射高颎、将作大匠刘龙、钜鹿郡公贺娄子干、太府少卿高龙乂等创造新都。三年春正月庚子,将入新都,大赦天下。六年二月丁亥,发丁男十一万修筑长城,三旬而罢。七年春正月癸巳,有事于太庙。乙未,制诸州岁贡三人。丁巳,祀朝日于东郊。己巳,陈遣兼散骑常侍王亨、兼通直散骑常侍王昚来聘。壬申,车驾幸醴泉宫。是月,发丁男十万余修筑长城,二旬而罢。夏四月己酉,幸晋王第。庚戌,于扬州开山阳渎,以通运漕。八年冬十月甲子,将伐陈,有事于太庙。命晋王广、秦王俊、清河公杨素并为行军元帅,以伐陈。九年春正月己巳,白虹夹日。辛未,贺若弼拔陈京口,韩擒虎拔陈南豫州。癸酉,以尚书右仆射虞庆则为右卫大将军。景子,贺若弼败陈师于蒋山,获其将萧摩诃。韩擒虎进师于建业,获其将任蛮奴,获陈主叔宝。陈国平,得州三十,郡一百,县四百。癸巳,遣使持节巡抚之。夏四月己亥,幸骊山,亲劳旋师。乙巳,三军凯入,献俘于太庙,拜晋王广为太尉。五月己卯,以吏部尚书苏威为尚书右仆射。六月乙丑,以荆州总管杨素为纳言。丁丑,以吏部侍郎卢恺为礼部尚书。时朝野物议,咸愿登封。秋七月景午。诏曰:“岂可命一将军,除一小国,遐迩注意,便谓太平。予以薄德而封名山,用虚言而干上帝,非朕攸闻。而今以后,言及封禅,宜即禁绝。”二十年冬十月乙丑,皇太子勇及诸子并废为庶人。杀柱国、太平县公史万岁。己巳,杀左卫大将军、五原郡公元旻。十一月戊子,天下地震,京师大风雪。以晋王广为皇太子。十二月戊午、诏东宫官属不得称臣于皇太子。仁寿元年春正月乙酉朔,大赦,改元。以尚书右仆射杨素为尚书左仆射,纳言苏威为尚书右仆射。丁酉,徙河南王昭为晋王。三年七月,诏令州县搜扬贤哲,皆取明知今古,通识治乱,究政教之本,达礼乐之源。不限多少,不得不举。以三旬,咸令进路。征召将送,必须以礼。四年春正月景辰,大赦。甲子,幸于仁寿宫。乙丑,诏赏罚支度,事无巨细,并付皇太子。夏四月乙卯,上不豫。六月庚申,大赦天下。八月甲辰,上疾甚,卧于仁寿宫,与百僚辞诀,并握手歔欷。是时,惟太子及陈宣华夫人侍疾,太子无礼,宣华诉之。帝怒曰:“死狗,那堪付后事?”遽令召勇。杨素秘不宣,乃屏左右,令张衡入,拉帝血溅屏风,冤痛之声闻于外。年六十四,在位二十四年。
