樊迟请学稼,子曰:“吾不如老农。”请学为圃。曰:“吾不如老圃。”樊迟出。子曰:“小人哉,樊须也!上好礼,则民莫敢不敬;上好义,则民莫敢不服;上好信,则民莫敢不用情。夫如是,则四方之民襁负其子而至矣,焉用稼?”
Zi Lu:
Fan Chi requested to be taught husbandry. The Master said, "I am not so good for that as an old husbandman." He requested also to be taught gardening, and was answered, "I am not so good for that as an old gardener." Fan Chi having gone out, the Master said, "A small man, indeed, is Fan Xu! If a superior man love propriety, the people will not dare not to be reverent. If he love righteousness, the people will not dare not to submit to his example. If he love good faith, the people will not dare not to be sincere. Now, when these things obtain, the people from all quarters will come to him, bearing their children on their backs - what need has he of a knowledge of husbandry?"

晋郑王闻而求之,不得,兴师围楚之城,三年不解。仓谷粟索,库无兵革。左右群臣、贤士,莫能禁止。于是楚王闻之,引泰阿之剑,登城而麾之。三军破败,士卒迷惑,流血千里,猛兽欧瞻,江水折扬,晋郑之头毕白。楚王于是大悦,曰:“此剑威耶?寡人力耶?”风胡子对曰:“剑之威也,因大王之神。”楚王曰:“夫剑,铁耳,固能有精神若此乎?”风胡子对曰:“时各有使然。轩辕、神农、赫胥之时,以石为兵,断树木为宫室,死而龙臧。夫神圣主使然。至黄帝之时,以玉为兵,以伐树木为宫室,凿地。夫玉,亦神物也,又遇圣主使然,死而龙臧。禹穴之时,以铜为兵,以凿伊阙,通龙门,决江导河,东注于东海。天下通平,治为宫室,岂非圣主之力哉?当此之时,作铁兵,威服三军。天下闻之,莫敢不服。此亦铁兵之神,大王有圣德。”楚王曰:“寡人闻命矣。”

齐宣王见颜斶,曰:“斶前!”斶亦曰:“王前!”宣王不悦。左右曰:“王,人君也。斶,人臣也。王曰‘斶前’,亦曰‘王前’,可乎?”斶对曰:“夫斶前为慕势,王前为趋士。与使斶为趋势,不如使王为趋士。”王忿然作色曰:“王者贵乎?士贵乎?”对曰:“士贵耳,王者不贵。”王曰:“有说乎?”斶曰:“有。昔者秦攻齐,令曰:‘有敢去柳下季垄五十步而樵采者,死不赦。’令曰:‘有能得齐王头者,封万户侯,赐金千镒。’由是观之,生王之头,曾不若死士之垄也。”宣王默然不悦。左右皆曰:“斶来,斶来!大王据千乘之地,而建千石钟,万石猹。天下之士,仁义皆来役处;辩知并进,莫不来语;东西南北,莫敢不服。求万物不备具,而百无不亲附。今夫士之高者,乃称匹夫,徒步而处农亩,下则鄙野、监门、闾里,士之贱也,亦甚矣!”

汉廷臣方议削吴,吴王恐削地无已,因欲发谋举事。念诸侯无足与计者,闻胶西王勇,好兵,诸侯皆畏惮之,于是乃使中大夫应高口说胶西王曰:“吴王不肖,有夙夜之忧,不敢自外,使使臣谕其愚心。”王曰:“何以教之?”高曰:“今者主上任用邪臣,听信谗贼,变更律令,侵削诸侯,徵求滋多,诛罚良重,日以益甚。语有之曰:‘镉㐄及米。’吴与胶西,知名诸侯也,一时见察,不得安肆矣。吴王身有内疾,不能朝请二十馀年,常患见疑,无以自白,胁肩絫足,犹惧不见释。窃闻大王以爵事有过,所闻诸侯削地,罪不至此,此恐不止削地而已。”王曰:“有之,子将柰何?”高曰:“同恶相助,同好相留,同情相求,同欲相趋,同利相死。今吴王自以与大王同忧,愿因时循理,弃躯以除患于天下,意亦可乎?”胶西王瞿然骇曰:“寡人何敢如是?主上虽急,固有死耳,安得不事?”高曰:“御史大夫朝错营或天子,侵夺诸侯,蔽忠塞贤,朝廷疾怨,诸侯皆有背叛之意,人事极矣。彗星出,蝗虫起,此万世一时,而愁劳,圣人所以起也。吴王内以朝错为诛,外从大王后车,方洋天下,所向者降,所指者下,莫敢不服。大王诚幸而许之一言,则吴王率楚王略函谷关,守荥阳敖仓之粟,距汉兵,治次舍,须大王。大王幸而临之,则天下可并,两主分割,不亦可乎?”王曰:“善。”归报吴王,犹恐其不果,乃身自为使者,至胶西面约之。
