文学曰:“始江都相董生推言阴阳,四时相继,父生之,子养之,母成之,子藏之。故春生,仁;夏长,德;秋成,义;冬藏,礼。此四时之序,圣人之所则也。刑不可任以成化,故广德教。言远必考之迩,故内恕以行,是以刑罚若加于己,勤劳若施于身。又安能忍杀其赤子,以事无用,罢弊所恃,而达瀛海乎?盖越人美蠃蚌而简太牢,鄙夫乐咋唶而怪韶濩。故不知味者,以芬香为臭,不知道者,以美言为乱耳。人无夭寿,各以其好恶为命。羿、敖以巧力不得其死,智伯以贪狠亡其身。天灾之证,祯祥之应,犹施与之望报,各以其类及。故好行善者,天助以福,符瑞是也。易曰:‘自天佑之,吉无不利。’好行恶者,天报以祸,妖灾是也。春秋曰:‘应是而有天灾。’周文、武尊贤受谏,敬戒不殆,纯德上休,神祇相况。《》云:‘降福穰穰,降福简简。’日者阳,阳道明;月者阴,阴道冥;君尊臣卑之义。故阳光盛于上,众阴之类消于下;月望于天,蚌蛤盛于渊。故臣不臣,则阴阳不调,日月有变;政教不均,则水旱不时,螟螣生。此灾异之应也。四时代叙,而人则其功,星列于天,而人象其行。常星犹公卿也,众星犹万民也。列星正则众星齐,常星乱则众星坠矣。”

赞曰:巫蛊之祸,岂不哀哉!此不唯一江充之辜,亦有天时,非人力所致焉。建元六年,蚩尤之旗见,其长竟天。后遂命将出征,略取河南,建置朔方。其春,戾太子生。自是之后,师行三十年,兵所诛屠夷灭死者不可胜数。及巫蛊事起,京师流血,僵尸数万,太子子父皆败。故太子生长于兵,与之终始,何独一嬖臣哉!秦始皇即位三十九年,内平六国,外攘四夷,死人如乱麻,暴骨长城之下,头卢相属于道,不一日而无兵。由是山东之难兴,四方溃而逆秦。秦将吏外畔,贼臣内发,乱作萧墙,祸成二世。故曰“兵犹火也,弗戢必自焚”,信矣。是以仓颉作书,“止”“戈”为“武”。圣人以武禁暴整乱,止息干戈,非以为残而兴纵之也。《》曰:“天之所助者顺也,人之所助者信也;君子履信思顺,自天佑之,吉无不利也。”故车千秋指明蛊情,章太子之冤。千秋材知未必能过人也,以其销恶运,遏乱原,因衰激极,道迎善气,传得天人之佑助云。

时天下兵起,莽遣更始将军廉丹讨伐山东。丹辟衍为掾,与俱至定陶。莽追诏丹曰:“仓廪尽矣,府库空矣,可以怒矣,可以战矣。将军受国重任,不捐身于中野,无以报恩塞责。”丹惶恐,夜召衍,以书示之。衍因说丹曰:“衍闻顺而成者,道之所大也;逆而功者,权之所贵也。是故期于有成,不问所由;论于大体,不守小节。昔逢丑父伏轼而使其君取饮,称于诸侯;郑祭仲立突而出忽,终得复位,美于春秋。盖以死易生,以存易亡,君子之道也。诡于众意,宁国存身,贤智之虑也。故《》曰‘穷则变,变则通,通则久,是以自天佑之,吉,无不利’。若夫知其不可而必行之,破军残众,无补于主,身死之日,负义于时,智者不为,勇者不行。且衍闻之,得时无怠。张良以五世相韩,椎秦始皇博浪之中,勇冠乎贲、育,名高乎太山。将军之先,为汉信臣。新室之兴,英俊不附。今海内溃乱,人怀汉德,甚于诗人思召公也,爱其甘棠,而况子孙乎?人所歌舞,天必从之。方今为将军计,莫若屯据大郡,镇抚吏士,砥厉其节,百里之内,牛酒日赐,纳雄桀之士,询忠智之谋,要将来之心,待从横之变,兴社稷之利,除万人之害,则福禄流于无穷,功烈著于不灭。何与军覆于中原,身膏于草野,功败名丧,耻及先祖哉?圣人转祸而为福,智士因败而为功,愿明公深计而无与俗同。”丹不能从。进及睢阳,复说丹曰:“盖闻明者见于无形,智者虑于未萌,况其昭晢者乎?凡患生于所忽,祸发于细微,败不可悔,时不可失。公孙鞅曰:‘有高人之行,负非于世;有独见之虑,见赘于人。’故信庸庸之论,破金石之策,袭当世之操,失高明之德。夫决者智之君也,疑者事之役也。时不重至,公勿再计。”丹不听,遂进及无盐,与赤眉战死。衍乃亡命河东。
