7 辨祟:
犹系罪司空作徒,未必到吏日恶,系役时凶也。使杀人者求吉日出诣吏,剬罪,推善时入狱系,宁能令事解、赦令至哉?人不触祸不被罪,不被罪不入狱。一旦令至,解械径出,未必有解除其凶者也。天下千狱,狱中万囚,其举事未必触忌讳也。居位食禄,专城长邑,以千万数,其迁徙日未必逢吉时也。历阳之都,一夕沉而为湖,其民未必皆犯岁、月也。高祖始起,丰、沛俱复,其民未必皆慎时日也。项羽攻襄安,襄安无噍类,未必不祷赛也。赵军为秦所坑于长平之下,四十万众同时俱死,其出家时,未必不择时也。辰日不哭,哭有重丧。戊、己死者,复尸有随。一家灭门,先死之日,未必辰与戊、己也。血忌不杀牲,屠肆不多祸;上朔不会众,沽舍不触殃。涂上之暴尸,未必出以往亡;室中之殡柩,未必还以归忌。由此言之,诸占射祸祟者,皆不可信用;信用之者,皆不可是。

赞曰:汉兴之初,庶事草创,唯一叔孙生略定朝廷之仪。若乃正朔服色郊望之事,数世犹未章焉。至于孝文,始以夏郊,而张仓据水德,公孙臣、贾谊更以为土德,卒不能明。孝武之世,文章为盛,太初改制,而儿宽、司马迁等犹从臣、谊之言,服色数度,遂顺黄德。彼以五德之传从所不胜,秦在水德,故谓汉据土而克之。刘向父子以为帝出于震,故包羲氏始受木德,其后以母传子,终而复始,自神农、黄帝下历唐虞三代而汉得火焉。故高祖始起,神母夜号,著赤帝之符,旗章遂赤,自得天统矣。昔共工氏以水德间于木火,与秦同运,非其次序,故皆不永。由是言之,祖宗之制盖有自然之应,顺时宜矣。究观方士祠官之变,谷永之言,不亦正乎!不亦正乎!
