在昔武王,邑姜方震太叔,梦帝谓己:“命尔子虞,而与之唐。”及生,手掌曰“虞”,因以为名。成王灭唐,遂以封之。此谓直应之梦也。《》云:“惟熊惟罴,男子之祥;惟虺惟蛇,女子之祥。”“众惟鱼矣,实惟丰年;旐惟旄矣,室家蓁蓁。”此谓象之梦也。孔子生于乱世,日思周公之德,夜即梦之。此谓意精之梦也。人有所思,即梦其到;有忧即梦其事。此谓记想之梦也。今事,贵人梦之即为祥,贱人梦之即为妖,君子梦之即为荣,小人梦之即为辱。此谓人位之梦也。晋文公于城濮之战,梦楚子伏己而盬其脑,是大恶也。及战,乃大胜。此谓极反之梦也。阴雨之梦,使人厌迷;阳旱之梦,使人乱离;大寒之梦,使人怨悲;大风之梦,使人飘飞。此谓感气之梦也。春梦发生,夏梦高明,秋冬梦热藏。此谓应时之梦也。阴病梦寒,阳病梦热,内病梦乱,外病梦发,百病之梦,或散或集。此谓气之梦也。人之情心,好恶不同,或以此吉,或以此凶。当各自察,常古所从。此谓性情之梦也。

左氏传文公十六年夏,有蛇自泉宫出,入于国,如先君之数。刘向以为近蛇孽也。泉宫在囿中,公母姜氏尝居之,蛇从之出,象宫将不居也。《》曰:“维虺维蛇,女子之祥。”又蛇入国,国将有女忧也。如先君之数者,公母将薨象也。秋,公母薨。公恶之,乃毁泉台。夫妖孽应行而自见,非见而为害也。文不改行循正,共御厥罚,而作非礼,以重其过。后二年薨,公子遂杀文之二子恶、视,而立宣公。文公夫人大归于齐。

熹平元年,青蛇见御坐,帝以问赐,赐上封事曰:“臣闻和气致祥,乖气致灾,休徵则五福应,咎徵则六极至。夫善不妄来,灾不空发。王者心有所惟,意有所想,虽未形颜色,而五星以之推移,阴阳为其变度。以此而观,天之与人,岂不符哉?尚书曰:‘天齐乎人,假我一日。’是其明徵也。夫皇极不建,则有蛇龙之孽。《》云:‘惟虺惟蛇,女子之祥。’故春秋两蛇斗于郑门,昭公殆以女败;康王一朝晏起,关睢见几而作。夫女谒行则谗夫昌,谗夫昌则苞苴通,故殷汤以之自戒,终济亢旱之灾。惟陛下思乾刚之道,别内外之宜,崇帝乙之制,受元吉之祉,抑皇甫之权,割艳妻之爱,则蛇变可消,祯祥立应。殷戊、宋景,其事甚明。”

臣闻和气应于有德,妖异生乎失政。上天告谴,则王者思其愆;政道或亏,则奸臣当其罚。夫蛇者,阴气所生;鳞者,甲兵之符也。鸿范传曰:“厥极弱,时则有蛇龙之孽。”又荧惑守亢,裴回不去,法有近臣谋乱,发于左右。不知陛下所与从容帷幄之内,亲信者为谁。宜急斥黜,以消天戒。臣又闻“惟虺惟蛇,女子之祥”。伏惟皇太后定策宫闼,援立圣明,书云:“父子兄弟,罪不相及。”窦氏之诛,岂宜咎延太后?幽隔空宫,愁感天心,如有雾露之疾,陛下当何面目以见天下?昔周襄王不能敬事其母,戎狄遂至交侵。孝和皇帝不绝窦后之恩,前世以为美谈。礼为人后者为之子,今以桓帝为父,岂得不以太后为母哉?援神契曰:“天子行孝,四夷和平。”方今边境日蹙,兵革蜂起,自非孝道,何以济之!愿陛下仰慕有虞蒸蒸之化,俯思凯风慰母之念。

Here may he repose in slumber!
May he sleep and awake,

What dreams are lucky?
They have been of bears and grisly bears;
They have been of cobras and [other] serpents. '

7 斯干:
大人占之。
维熊维罴、男子之祥。
维虺维蛇、女子之祥。
Si Gan:
The chief diviner will divine them.
The bears and grisly bears,
Are the auspicious intimations of sons.
