Yan Yuan:
Si Ma Niu, full of anxiety, said, "Other men all have their brothers, I only have not." Zi Xia said to him, "There is the following saying which I have heard - 'Death and life have their determined appointment; riches and honors depend upon Heaven.' Let the superior man never fail reverentially to order his own conduct, and let him be respectful to others and observant of propriety - then all within the four seas will be his brothers. What has the superior man to do with being distressed because he has no brothers?"

孔子曰:“死生有命,富贵在天。”鲁平公欲见孟子,嬖人臧仓毁孟子而止。孟子曰:“天也!”孔子、圣人,孟子、贤者,诲人安道,不失是非,称言命者,有命审也。《淮南书》曰:“仁鄙在时不在行,利害在命不在智。”贾生曰:“天不可与期,道不可与谋,迟速有命,焉识其时?”高祖击黥布,为流矢所中,疾甚。吕后迎良医,医曰:“可治。”高祖骂之曰:“吾以布衣提三尺剑取天下,此非天命乎!命乃在天,虽扁鹊何益?”韩信与帝论兵,谓高祖曰:“陛下所谓天授,非智力所得。”扬子云曰:“遇不遇,命也。”太史公曰:“富贵不违贫贱,贫贱不违富贵。”是谓从富贵为贫贱,从贫贱为富贵也。

1 命义:
墨家之论,以为人死无命;儒家之议,以为人死有命。言有命者,见子夏言“死生有命,富贵在天”。言无命者,闻历阳之都,一宿沉而为湖;秦将白起坑赵降卒于长平之下,四十万众同时皆死;春秋之时,败绩之军,死者蔽草,尸且万数;饥馑之岁,饿者满道;温气疫疠,千户灭门,如必有命,何其秦、齐同也?

3 命义:
国命系于众星,列宿吉凶,国有祸福;众星推移,人有盛衰。人之有吉凶,犹岁之有丰耗,命有衰盛,物有贵贱。一岁之中,一贵一贱;一寿之间,一衰一盛。物之贵贱,不在丰耗;人之衰盛,不在贤愚。子夏曰:“死生有命,富贵在天。”而不曰:“死生在天,富贵有命”者,何则?死生者,无象在天,以性为主。禀得坚强之性,则气渥厚而体坚强,坚强则寿命长,寿命长则不夭死。禀性软弱者,气少泊而性羸窳,羸窳则寿命短,短则蚤死。故言“有命”,命则性也。至于富贵所禀,犹性所禀之气,得众星之精。众星在天,天有其象,得富贵象则富贵,得贫贱象则贫贱,故曰“在天”。在天如何?天有百官,有众星,天施气而众星布精,天所施气,众星之气在其中矣。人禀气而生,舍气而长,得贵则贵,得贱则贱。贵或秩有高下,富或赀有多少,皆星位尊卑小大之所授也。故天有百官,天有众星,地有万民、五帝、三王之精。天有王梁、造父,人亦有之,禀受其气,故巧于御。

问孔

孔子称曰:“死生有命,富贵在天。”若此者,人之死生,自有长短,不在操行善恶也。成事:颜渊蚤死,孔子谓之短命,由此知短命夭死之人,必有邪行也。子路入道虽浅,闻孔子之言,知死生之实。孔子誓以“予所鄙者、天厌之”,独不为子路言:“夫子惟命未当死,天安得厌杀之乎?”若此,誓子路以“天厌之”,终不见信。不见信,则孔子自解,终不解也。

44 问孔:
夫人富贵,在天命乎?在人知也?如在天命,知术求之不能得;如在人,孔子何为言“死生有命,富贵在天?”夫谓富不受命,而自知术得之,贵亦可不受命,而自以努力求之。世无不受贵命而自得贵,亦知无不受富命而自得富者。成事:孔子不得富贵矣,周流应聘,行说诸侯,智穷策困,还定《诗》、《书》,望绝无冀,称“已矣夫”。自知无贵命,周流无补益也。孔子知己不受贵命,周流求之不能得,而谓赐不受富命,而以术知得富,言行相违,未晓其故。

45 问孔:
或曰:“欲攻子贡之短也。子贡不好道德,而徒好货殖,故攻其短,欲令穷服而更其行节。”夫攻子贡之短,可言“赐不好道德,而货殖焉。”何必立“不受命”,与前言“富贵在天”相违反也?

又问曰:“‘死生有命,富贵在天。’武王之命,何可代乎?”应曰:“九龄之梦,天夺文王年以益武王。克殷二年之时,九龄之年未尽,武王不豫,则请之矣。人命不可请,独武王可。非世常法,故藏于《金縢》;不可复为,故掩而不见。”难曰:“九龄之梦,武王已得文王之年未?”应曰:“已得之矣。”难曰:“已得文王之年,命当自延。克殷二年,虽病犹将不死,周公何为请而代之?”应曰:“人君爵人以官,议定,未之即与,曹下案目,然后可诺。天虽夺文王年以益武王,犹须周公请,乃能得之。命数精微,非一卧之梦所能得也。”应曰:“九龄之梦能得也。”难曰:“九龄之梦,文王梦与武王九龄,武王梦帝予其九龄,其天已予之矣,武王已得之矣,何须复请?人且得官,先梦得爵,其后莫举,犹自得官。何则?兆象先见,其验必至也。古者谓年为龄,已得九龄,犹人梦得爵也。周公因必效之梦,请之于天,功安能大乎?”

辨祟

孔子曰:“死生有命,富贵在天。”苟有时日,诚有祸祟,圣人何惜不言?何畏不说?案古图籍,仕者安危,千君万臣,其得失吉凶,官位高下,位禄降升,各有差品。家人治产,贫富息耗,寿命长短,各有远近。非高大尊贵举事以吉日,下小卑贱以凶时也。以此论之,则亦知祸福死生,不在遭逢吉祥、触犯凶忌也。然则人之生也,精气育也;人之死者,命穷绝也。人之生,未必得吉逢喜;其死,独何为谓之犯凶触忌?以孔子证之,以死生论之,则亦知夫百祸千凶,非动作之所致也。孔子圣人、知府也,死生、大事也,大事、道效也。孔子云:“死生有命,富贵在天。”众文微言不能夺,俗人愚夫不能易,明矣。
