| 8 | 宥坐: | 孔子南适楚，厄于陈蔡之间，七日不火食，藜羹不糁，弟子皆有饥色。子路进而问之曰：“由闻之：为善者天报之以福，为不善者天报之以祸。今夫子累德积义怀美，行之日久矣，奚居之隐也？”孔子曰：“由不识，吾语女。女以知者为必用邪？王子比干不见剖心乎！女以忠者为必用邪？关龙逢不见刑乎！女以谏者为必用邪？吴子胥不磔姑苏东门外乎！夫遇不遇者，时也；贤不肖者，材也；君子博学深谋，不遇时者多矣！由是观之，不遇世者众矣，何独丘也哉！且夫芷兰生于深林，非以无人而不芳。君子之学，非为通也，为穷而不困，忧而意不衰也，知祸福终始而心不惑也。夫贤不肖者，材也；为不为者，人也；遇不遇者，时也；死生者，命也。今有其人，不遇其时，虽贤，其能行乎？苟遇其时，何难之有！故君子博学深谋，修身端行，以俟其时。”孔子曰：“由！居！吾语女。昔晋公子重耳霸心生于曹，越王句践霸心生于会稽，齐桓公小白霸心生于莒。故居不隐者思不远，身不佚者志不广；女庸安知吾不得之桑落之下？” |

| Man in the World,...: | When Confucius went to Chu, Jie-yu, the madman of Chu, as he was wandering about, passed by his door, and said, '0 Phoenix, 0 Phoenix, how is your virtue degenerated! The future is not to be waited for; the past is not to be sought again! When good order prevails in the world, the sage tries to accomplish all his service; when disorder prevails, he may preserve his life; at the present time, it is enough if he simply escape being punished. Happiness is lighter than a feather, but no one knows how to support it; calamity is heavier than the earth, and yet no one knows how to avoid it. Give over! give over approaching men with the lessons of your virtue! You are in peril! you are in peril, hurrying on where you have marked out the ground against your advance! I avoid publicity, I avoid publicity, that my path may not be injured. I pursue my course, now going backwards, now crookedly, that my feet may not be hurt. |

| 1 | 陆通: | 陆通，字接舆，楚人也。好养性，躬耕以为食。楚昭王时，通见楚政无常，乃佯狂不仕，故时人谓之“楚狂”。孔子适楚，楚狂接舆游其门曰：“凤兮凤兮，何如德之衰也！来世不可待，往世不可追也。天下有道，圣人成焉；天下无道，圣人生焉。方今之时，仅免刑焉。福轻乎羽，莫之知载；祸重乎地，莫之知避。已乎已乎！临人以德。殆乎殆乎！画地而趋。迷阳迷阳，无伤吾行。却曲却曲，无伤吾足。山木自寇也，膏火自煎也。桂可食，故伐之；漆可用，故割之。人皆知有用之用，而不知无用之用也。孔子下车，欲与之言，趋而避之，不得与之言。楚王闻陆通贤，遣使者持金百镒、车马二驷，往聘通，曰：“王请先生治江南。”通笑而不应。使者去，妻从市来曰：“先生少而为义，岂老违之哉？”门外车迹何深也？妾闻义士非礼不动。妾事先生，躬耕以自食，亲织以为衣，食饱衣暖，其乐自足矣。不如去之。”于是夫负釜甑，妻戴紝器，变名易姓，游诸名山，食桂栌实，服黄菁子，隐蜀峨眉山，寿数百年。俗传以为仙云。 |
