How vast is God, The ruler of men below! How arrayed in terrors is God, With many things irregular in His ordinations! Heaven gave birth to the multitudes of the people, But the nature it confers is not to be depended on. All are [good] at first, But few prove themselves to be so at the last. |

| 18 | 大雅: | 蕩蕩上帝，下民之辟，上帝以托君王也。辟，君也。蕩蕩，言法度廢壞之貌也。厲王乃以此居人上，為天下之君，言其無可則像之甚也。疾威上帝，其命多僻，疾，病人矣。威，罪人矣。疾病人者，重賦斂也。威罪人者，峻刑法也。其政教又多邪僻不由舊章也。天生烝民，其命匪諶，靡不有初，鮮克有終，天之生此衆民，其教道之，非當以誠信使之忠厚乎。今則不然，民始皆庶幾於善道，後更化於惡俗也。既愆爾止，靡明靡晦，式號式呼，俾晝作夜，使晝為夜也。愆，過也。汝既過於沈湎矣。又不為明晦有止息也。醉則號呼相效，用晝日作夜，不視政事也。文王曰：咨咨汝殷商，匪上帝不時，殷不用舊，此言紂之亂，非其生不得其時，乃不用先王之故法之所致也。雖無老成人，尚有典刑，老成人，謂若伊尹，伊陟，臣扈之屬也。雖無此臣，猶有常事故法可案用。曾是莫聽，大命以傾，莫，無也。朝廷君臣皆任喜怒，曾無用典刑治事者，以至誅滅也。殷鑒不遠，在夏后之世。此言殷之明鏡不遠也。近在夏后之世，謂湯誅桀也。後武王誅紂，今之王何以不用為戒乎。 |
