晏子對曰:「正士處勢臨眾不阿私,行于國足養而不忘故;通則事上,使卹其下,窮則教下,使順其上;事君盡禮行忠,不正爵祿,不用則去而不議。其交友也,論身義行,不為苟戚,不同則疏而不悱;不毀進于君,不以刻民尊於國。故用于上則民安,行于下則君尊;故得眾上不疑其身,用于君不悖于行。是以進不喪亡,退不危身,此正士之行也。

11 體論:
若夫主明而臣暗,主暗而臣僞,有盡忠不見信,有見信而不盡忠,溷淆於臣主之分,出入於治亂之間,或被褐懷玉以待時,或巧言令色以容身,又可勝盡哉。是以古之全其道者,進則正,退則曲,正則與世樂其業,曲則全身歸於道,不傲世以華衆,不立高以為名,不為苟得以偷安,不為苟免而無耻,夫修之於鄉閭,壞之於朝廷,可惜也。修之於己立,壞之於闔棺,可惜也。君子惜茲二者,是以有殺身以成仁,無求生以害仁,况害仁以求寵乎。故孔子曰:不義而富且貴,於我如浮雲,若夫智慮足以圖國,忠貞足以悟主,公平足以懷衆,温柔足以服人,不排毁以取進,不刻人以自入,不苟容以隱忠,不耽禄以傷高,通則使上恤其下,窮則教下順其上,故用於上則民安,行於下則君尊,可謂進不失忠,退不失行,此正士之義,為臣之體也。
