13 儒行:
儒有內稱不辟親,外舉不辟怨,程功積事,推賢而進達之,不望其報;君得其志,茍利國家,不求富貴。其舉賢援能有如此者。
Ru Xing:
'The scholar recommends members of his own family (to public employment), without shrinking from doing so, because of their kinship, and proposes others beyond it, without regard to their being at enmity with him; he estimates men's merits, and takes into consideration all their services, selecting those of virtue and ability, and putting them forward, without expecting any recompense from them; the ruler thus gets what he wishes, and if benefit results to the state, the scholar does not seek riches or honours for himself - such is he in promoting the employment of the worthy and bringing forward the able.

聖王明君則不然,內舉不避親,外舉不避讎。是在焉從而舉之,非在焉從而罰之。是以賢良遂進而姦邪并退,故一舉而能服諸侯。其在記曰:「堯有丹朱,而舜有商均,啟有五觀,商有太甲,武王有管、蔡」,五王之所誅者,皆父兄子弟之親也,而所殺亡其身殘破其家者何也?以其害國傷民敗法類也。觀其所舉,或在山林藪澤巖穴之間,或在囹圄緤紲纏索之中,或在割烹芻牧飯牛之事。然明主不羞其卑賤也,以其能、為可以明法,便國利民,從而舉之,身安名尊。

治水潦者禹也。播五種者后稷也。聽獄折衷者皋陶也。舜無為也。而天下以為父母,愛天下莫甚焉。天下之善者唯仁也。夫喪其子者,苟可以得之,無擇人也。仁者之於善也亦是,然故堯舉舜於畎畝,湯舉伊尹於雍人,內舉不避親,外舉不避仇,仁者之於善也。無擇也。無惡也。唯善之所在。堯問於舜曰:何事。舜曰:事天,平地而注水,水流濕,均薪而施火,火從燥,召之類也。是故堯為善而衆美至焉。桀為非而衆惡至焉。

凡士之結髮束修,立志於家門,欲以事君也。宗族稱孝焉。鄉黨稱悌焉。及志乎學,自托於師友,師貴其義而友安其信,孝悌以篤,信義又著,以此立身,以此事君,何待乎法,然後為安,及其為人臣也。稱才居位,稱能受禄,不面譽以求親,不偷悅以苟合,公家之利,知無不為也。上足以尊主安國,下足以豐財阜民,謀事不忘其君,圖身不忘其國,內匡其過,外揚其義,不下比以暗上,不上同以病下,見善行之如不及,見賢舉之如不容,內舉不避親戚,外舉不避仇讎,程功積事而不望其報,進賢達能而不求其賞,道塗不争,險易之利,見難而無苟免之心,其身可殺而其守不可奪,此直道之臣所以佐賢明之主,致治平之功者也。
