42 道德經:
道生一,一生二,二生三,三生萬物。萬物負陰而抱陽,沖氣以為和。人之所惡,唯孤、寡、不穀,而王公以為稱。故物或損之而益,或益之而損。人之所教,我亦教之。強梁者不得其死,吾將以為教父。
Dao De Jing:
(The transformations of the Dao)
The Dao produced One; One produced Two; Two produced Three; Three produced All things. All things leave behind them the Obscurity (out of which they have come), and go forward to embrace the Brightness (into which they have emerged), while they are harmonised by the Breath of Vacancy.
What men dislike is to be orphans, to have little virtue, to be as carriages without naves; and yet these are the designations which kings and princes use for themselves. So it is that some things are increased by being diminished, and others are diminished by being increased.
What other men (thus) teach, I also teach. The violent and strong do not die their natural death. I will make this the basis of my teaching.

老子曰:道者守其所已有,不求其所以未有,求其所未得即所有者亡,脩其所已有即所欲者至。治未固於不亂,而事為治者必危,行者未免於無非,而急求名者必剉,故福莫大於無禍,利莫大於不喪。故「物或益之而損,損之而益」。道不可以勸就利者,而可以安神避害,故嘗無禍不嘗有福,嘗無罪不嘗有功。道曰芒芒昧昧,從天之威,與天同氣無思慮也,無設儲也,來者不迎,去者不將,人雖東西南北,獨立中央。故處眾枉,不失其直,與天下並流,不離其域,不為善,不避醜,遵天之道,不為始,不專己,循天之理,不豫謀,不棄時,與天為期,不求得,不辭福,從天之則,內無奇福,外無奇禍,故禍福不生,焉有人賊。故至德言同賂,事同福,上下一心,無歧道旁見者,退章於邪,開道之於善,而民向方矣。

老子曰:德少而寵多者譏,才下而位高者危,無大功而有厚祿者微,故物或益之而損,或損之而益。眾人皆知利利,而不知病病,唯聖人知病之為利,利之為病。故再實之木其根必傷,掘藏之家其後必殃,夫大利者反為害,天之道也。

道生一,道使所生者一也。一生二,一生陰與陽也。二生三,陰陽生和、清、濁三氣,分為天地人也。三生萬物。天地人共生萬物也,天施地化,人長養之也。萬物負陰而抱陽,萬物無不負陰而向陽,迴心而就日。沖氣以為和。萬物中皆有元氣,得以和柔,若胸中有藏,骨中有髓,草木中有空虛與氣通,故得久生也。人之所惡,惟孤﹑寡﹑不穀,而王公以為稱。孤寡不轂者,不祥之名,而王公以為稱者,處謙卑,法空虛和柔。故物或損之而益,引之不得,推之必還。或益之而損。夫增高者志崩,貪富者致患。人之所教,謂眾人所教,去弱為強,去柔為剛。我亦教之。言我教眾人,使去強為弱,去柔為剛。強梁者不得其死,強粱者,謂不信玄妙,背叛道德,不從經教,尚勢任力也。不得其死者,為天命所絕,兵刃所伐,王法所殺,不得以壽命死。吾將以為教父。父,使也。老子以強梁之人為教,誡之始也。

天下有三危:少德而多寵,一危也;才下而位高,二危也;身無大功而受厚祿,三危也。故物或損之而益,或益之而損。何以知其然也?昔者,楚莊王既勝晉於河、雍之間,歸而封孫叔敖,辭而不受。病疽將死,謂其子曰:「吾則死矣,王必封女。女必讓肥鐃之地,而受沙石之間有寑丘者。其地確石而名醜,荊人鬼,越人禨,人莫之利也。」孫叔敖死,王果封其子以肥鐃之地。其子辭而不受,請有寑之丘。楚國之俗,功臣二世而爵祿,惟孫叔敖獨存。此所謂損之而益也。何謂益之而損?昔晉厲公南伐楚,東伐齊,西伐秦,北伐燕,兵橫行天下而無所綣,威服四方而無所詘,遂合諸侯于嘉陵。氣充志驕,淫侈無度,暴虐萬民。內無輔拂之臣,外無諸侯之助,戮殺大臣,親近導諛。明年出遊匠驪氏欒書、中行偃劫而幽之。諸侯莫之救,百姓莫之哀,三月而死。夫戰勝攻取,地廣而名尊,此天下所願也,然而終於身死國亡,此所謂益之而損者也。夫孫叔敖之請有寑之丘,沙石之地,所以累世不奪也;晉厲公之合諸侯于嘉陵,所以身死於匠驪氏也。眾人皆知利利而病病也,唯聖人知病之為利,知利之為病也。夫再實之木根必傷,掘藏之家必有殃。以言大利而反為害也。張武教智伯奪韓、魏之地而禽于晉陽,申叔時教莊王封陳氏之後而霸天下。孔子讀《》,至《損》、《益》,未嘗不憤然而歎,曰:「益損者,其王者之事與!事或欲與利之,適足以害之;或欲害之,乃反以利之。利害之反,禍福之門戶,不可不察也。」
