Annals of the Five...:
Emperor Yao was highly meritorious. His benevolence was like that of heaven, and his wisdom that of a god; when approached he was genial as the sun, and was looked out for as clouds in dry weather. He was rich without being proud, and esteemed yet not lax. He wore a yellow hat and plain silk dress, and drove a red car drawn by white horses. He was able to display his supereminent virtue, by bringing into close alliance the nine degrees of kindred, and they being rendered harmonious, he forthwith regulated the people, and his people having become enlightened, the various states were at peace.

自元帝時,韋玄成為丞相,奏罷太上皇寢廟園,當上書言:「臣聞孔子曰:『如有王者,必世而後仁。』三十年之間,道德和洽,制禮興樂,災害不生,禍亂不作。今聖漢受命而王,繼體承業二百餘年,孜孜不怠,政令清矣。然風俗未和,陰陽未調,災害數見,意者大本有不立與?何德化休徵不應之久也!禍福不虛,必有因而至者焉。宜深跡其道而務修其本。昔者帝堯南面而治,先『克明俊德,以親九族』,而化及萬國。孝經曰:『天地之性人為貴,人之行莫大於孝,孝莫大於嚴父,嚴父莫大於配天,則周公其人也。』夫孝子善述人之志,周公既成文武之業而制作禮樂,修嚴父配天之事,知文王不欲以子臨父,故推而序之,上極於后稷而以配天。此聖人之德,亡以加於孝也。高皇帝聖德受命,有天下,尊太上皇,猶周文武之追王太王、王季也。此漢之始祖,後嗣所宜尊奉以廣盛德,孝之至也。《》云:『正稽古建功立事,可以永年,傳於亡窮。』」上納其言,下詔復太上皇寢廟園。

曰若稽古帝堯,曰放勳,欽、明、文、思、安安,允恭克讓,光被四表,格于上下。克明俊德,以親九族。九族既睦,平章百姓。百姓昭明,協和萬邦。黎民於變時雍。
Canon of Yao:
Examining into antiquity, (we find that) the Di Yao was styled Fang-xun. He was reverential, intelligent, accomplished, and thoughtful - naturally and without effort. He was sincerely courteous, and capable of (all) complaisance. The bright (influence of these qualities) was felt through the four quarters (of the land), and reached to (heaven) above and (earth) beneath. He made the able and virtuous distinguished, and thence proceeded to the love of (all in) the nine classes of his kindred, who (thus) became harmonious. He (also) regulated and polished the people (of his domain), who all became brightly intelligent. (Finally), he united and harmonized the myriad states; and so the black-haired people were transformed. The result was (universal) concord.

帝堯,字放勛,一名同成育,陶唐氏帝嚳之子。伊祁姓也。母曰慶都,為嚳妃,出觀河渚,遇赤龍而孕。寄伊長儒家產,甲申歲而生堯,丹陵也。堯眉八采,日角方目,足有元武之字,手有三河之文。豐下銳上,就之如日,望之如雲。黃收純衣,彤車白馬。冬則鹿裘,夏則絺葛。采椽不斲,土階三等,克明俊德,以親九族。九族既睦,平章百姓。百姓昭明,協和萬邦。焦僥氏來獻沒羽,常年之人得神獻若羊名曰獬豸,堯乃緝其皮以為帳,分命羲仲、和仲,日中星鳥,以殷仲春,日永星火,以定仲夏。宵中星虛,以正仲秋。日短星昴,以正仲冬。時許耳之子名曰由,字道開,一字仲武,仲武黃白色,長八尺九寸,兄弟七人,十九而隱。堯欲禪之,由乃洗耳。是後景星曜於天,甘露降於地,朱草生於囿,鳳凰止於庭。以艸疌莆蓂莢之瑞,都於平陽,命羲仲、羲叔、和仲、和叔掌四方,在位四十一年。洪水滔天,懷山襄陵,四岳舉鯀治水,九年績庸不成。五十年乃更諮四岳,得舜,乃在璿璣玉衡,以齊七政。類於上帝,禋於六宗,望於山川,辨於群瑞。堯崩,乃葬濟陰城,廟居齊郡。有柏樹死而更生焉。舜攝政二十八年,堯乃殂。三年,禮畢,舜避丹朱於河南,諸侯朝覲,訟獄者不之丹朱而之舜,舜曰:「乃天命也。」初堯教丹朱棋,以文桑為局,犀象為子。

臣聞天稱其高者,以無不覆;地稱其廣者,以無不載;日月稱其明者,以無不照;江海稱其大者,以無不容。故孔子曰:「大哉堯之為君!惟天為大,惟堯則之。」夫天德之於萬物,可謂弘廣矣。蓋堯之為教,先親後疏,自近及遠。其傳曰:「克明俊德,以親九族;九族旣睦,平章百姓。」及周之文王亦崇厥化,其詩曰:「刑于寡妻,至于兄弟,以御于家邦。」是以雍雍穆穆。風人詠之。昔周公弔管、蔡之不咸,廣封懿親以藩屏王室,傳曰:「周之宗盟,異姓為後。」誠骨肉之恩爽而不離,親親之義寔在敦固,未有義而後其君,仁而遺其親者也。
