Yong Ye:
The Master said, "Admirable indeed was the virtue of Hui! With a single bamboo dish of rice, a single gourd dish of drink, and living in his mean narrow lane, while others could not have endured the distress, he did not allow his joy to be affected by it. Admirable indeed was the virtue of Hui!"

禹、稷當平世,三過其門而不入,孔子賢之。顏子當亂世,居於陋巷。一簞食,一瓢飲。人不堪其憂,顏子不改其樂,孔子賢之。孟子曰:「禹、稷、顏回同道。禹思天下有溺者,由己溺之也;稷思天下有飢者,由己飢之也,是以如是其急也。禹、稷、顏子易地則皆然。今有同室之人鬬者,救之,雖被髮纓冠而救之,可也。鄉鄰有鬬者,被髮纓冠而往救之,則惑也,雖閉戶可也。」
Li Lou II:
Yu and Ji, in an age when the world was being brought back to order, thrice passed their doors without entering them. Confucius praised them. The disciple Yan, in an age of disorder, dwelt in a mean narrow lane, having his single bamboo-cup of rice, and his single gourd-dish of water; other men could not have endured the distress, but he did not allow his joy to be affected by it. Confucius praised him. Mencius said, 'Yu, Ji, and Yan Hui agreed in the principle of their conduct. Yu thought that if any one in the kingdom were drowned, it was as if he drowned him. Ji thought that if any one in the kingdom suffered hunger, it was as if he famished him. It was on this account that they were so earnest. If Yu and Ji, and Yanzi, had exchanged places, each would have done what the other did. Here now in the same apartment with you are people fighting - you ought to part them. Though you part them with your cap simply tied over your unbound hair, your conduct will be allowable. If the fighting be only in the village or neighbourhood, if you go to put an end to it with your cap tied over your hair unbound, you will be in error. Although you should shut your door in such a case, your conduct would be allowable.'

王隱《晉書》曰:龔壯字子瑋,巴西人也。潔己自守,與鄉人譙秀齊名。父叔為李特所害,壯積年不除喪,力弱不能復仇。及李壽戍漢中,與李期有嫌。期,特孫也,壯欲假壽以報,乃說壽曰:「節下若能并有西土,稱藩於晉,人必樂從。且舍小就大,以危易安,莫大之策也。」壽然之。遂率眾討期,果克之。壽猶襲偽號,欲官之。壯誓不仕,賂遺一無所受。壯上書說壽以歸順,允天心,應人望,永為國藩,福流子孫。壽不納。壯謂百行之本,莫大忠孝。既假壽殺期,私仇已雪,語覃使其歸朝,以明臣節。壽既不從,壯遂稱耳聾。又云:手不制物,終身不復至成都,惟研考經典,覃思文章。至李勢時卒。
又曰:韓績字興齊,廣陵人也。先避世居於吳之嘉興。父建仕吳,至大鴻臚。績少好文學,以潛退為操,布衣蔬食,不交當世,由是東土并宗敬焉。司徒王導聞其名,辟以為掾,不就。咸康末,會稽內史孔愉上疏薦之,詔以安車束帛征之,稱老病,卒於家。
又曰:譙秀字元彥,巴西人也。少而靜默,不交於世。知天下將亂,預絕人事,雖內外宗親不相見。郡察孝廉,州舉秀才,皆不就。及李雄據巴蜀,慕秀名,具束帛安車征,皆不應。常冠皮弁弊衣,躬耕山藪。后避難宕渠,鄉里宗族依憑之者以百數。秀年出八十,眾人欲代之負擔。秀曰:「各有老弱,當先營護。吾氣力猶足自堪,豈以垂朽之年累諸君也?」年九十餘卒。
又曰:辛謐字叔重,隴西狄道人也。少有志尚,博學善屬文。性恬靜,不妄交游。召拜太子舍人,諸王文學,累征不起。永嘉末,沒于劉聰,拜太中大夫,固辭不受。又歷石季龍之世,并不應辟命。雖處死亂之中,頹然高邁,視榮利蔑如也。及冉閔僣亂,復備禮,征為太常。謐遺閔書,因不食而卒。
又曰:索襲字偉祖,敦煌人也。虛靜好學,不應州郡之命,舉孝廉賢良方正,皆以疾辭。游思於陰陽之術,著天文地理十餘篇,多所啟發。不與當世交通,或獨語獨笑,或長嘆涕泣,或請問不言。敦煌太守陰澹奇而造焉,經日忘返,出而嘆曰:「索先生碩德名儒,真可以咨大義。」澹欲行鄉射之禮,請為三老。會病卒,時年七十九。
又曰:楊軻,天水人也。少好《易》,長而不娶,學業精微,養徒數百,常食粗飯,飲水,衣短褐。人不堪其憂,而軻悠然自得。疏賓異客,音旨未嘗交也。雖受業門徒,非入室弟子莫得親言。欲所論授入室弟子,令遞相宣授。劉曜僣號,征拜太常,軻固辭不起,曜亦敬而不逼。遂隱於隴山。及曜為石勒所擒,秦人東徙,軻留長安。石季龍嗣位,備玄纁束帛安車征之。軻以疾辭,迫之乃發。既見季龍,不拜;與語,不言。有司以軻倨傲,請從大不敬論。季龍弗從,下詔任軻所尚。常臥土床,覆以布被,裸寢其中,下無茵褥。潁川荀鋪,好奇之士也,造而談經,軻瞑目不答。鋪發軻被,露其形,大笑之。軻神體頹然,無驚怒之狀。于時咸以為焦先之徒,未有能量其深淺也。后上疏陳鄉思求還。季龍送以安車蒲輪。自歸秦州,仍教授不絕。
又曰:公孫鳳字子鸞,上谷人也。隱於昌黎之九城山,冬衣單布,寢土床,彈琴吟詠,陶然自得。人咸異之,莫能測也。慕容暐以安車征至鄴。及見暐,不言不拜,衣食舉動如在九城。賓客造請,鮮得與言。數年病卒。
又曰:公孫永字子陽,襄平人也。少而好學,恬虛,隱於平郭南山,不娶妻妾,非身所墾植則不衣不食。吟詠巖間,忻然自得,年逾九十,操尚不虧。與公孫鳳俱被慕容暐征至鄴,王公已下造之,不與言。雖經隆寒盛暑,端然自若。一歲餘,詐狂,暐送之平郭。后苻堅又將備禮征之,難其年耆路遠,乃遣使致問,未至,卒。堅深悼之。
又曰:張忠字巨和,中山人也。永嘉之難,隱於太山,恬靜寡欲,清虛服氣,餐芝餌石,修導養之法。冬無缊袍,夏則帶索,端拱若尸。無琴書之適,不修經典勸教,但以至道虛無為宗。其居依崇巖幽谷,鑿池為窟室。弟子亦以窟居,去忠六十余步,五日一朝。其教以形不以言,弟子授業,觀形而退。立道壇于窟上,每旦朝拜之。食用瓦器,鑿石為釜,左右居人饋之衣食,一無所受。年在期頤,而視聽無爽。苻堅遣使征之,乃至長安。堅賜以衣冠,辭曰:「年朽發落,不堪衣冠,請以野服入謁。」從之。后堅安車送之,行達華山,嘆曰:「我東岳道士,歿於西岳,命也,奈何!」行五十里,及關而死。堅謚安道先生。
又曰:石垣字洪孫,自云北海劇人。居無定處,不娶妻妾,不營產業,食不求美,衣必粗弊。或有遺其衣服,受而施人。人有喪葬,輒杖策吊之,路無遠近,時有寒暑,必在其中。或同日共時,咸皆見焉。姚萇之亂,莫知所終。
又曰:郭荷字承休,洛陽人也。六世祖整,漢安順之世,公府八辟,公車五征,皆不就。自整及荷,世以經學致位。荷明究群籍,特善史書,不應州郡之命。張祚遣使者以安車束帛征為博士祭酒。后上疏乞還,祚以安車蒲輪送還張掖東山。年八十卒,謚曰玄德先生。
又曰:祁嘉字孔賓,酒泉人也。少清貧好學,年二十餘,夜忽窗中有聲呼曰:「祁孔賓,隱去來,修飾人間甚苦不可諧,所得未毛銖,所喪如山崖。」旦而逃去,西至敦煌,依學官誦書。貧無衣食,為書生都養以自給。遂博通經傳,精究大義,而教授門生百餘人。張重華征為儒林祭酒,常謂為先生而不名之。竟以壽終。
又曰:瞿硎先生者,不得姓名,亦不知何許人也。泰和末,常居宣城郡界山中,山有瞿硎,因以名焉。大司馬桓溫常往造之。既至,見先生被鹿裘,坐于石室,神無忤色。溫及僚佐數十人皆莫測之,乃命伏滔為之銘贊,竟卒於山中。
又曰:宋纖字令文,敦煌人也。少有遠操,沉靜不與世交,隱於酒泉南山。酒泉太守馬岌,高尚之士也,具威儀,鳴鐃鼓,造焉。纖高樓重閣,拒而不見。岌嘆曰:「名可聞而身不可見,德可仰而形不可觀。吾乃今而後知先生人中之龍也。」題詩於石壁曰:「丹崖百丈,青壁萬尋;奇木蓊郁,蔚若鄧林;其人如玉,維國之琛;室邇人遐,實勞我心。」纖注《論語》及為詩頌數萬言。年八十,篤學不倦。張祚復遣使者備禮征為太子友,逼喻甚切。纖喟然嘆曰:「德非莊生,才非干木,何敢稽停明命。」遂至姑藏。祚遣其太子太和以執友禮造之,纖稱疾不見,贈遺一皆不受。后卒,謚曰玄虛先生。
又曰:鄧粲,長沙人也。少以高潔著名,與南陽劉驎之、南郡劉尚公同志友善,并不應州郡辟命。荊州刺史桓公卑辭厚禮,請粲為別駕。粲嘉其好賢,乃起應召。驎之、尚公謂粲曰:「卿道學深,眾所推懷,忽然改節,誠失所望。」粲答曰:「足下可謂有志於隱而未知隱。夫隱之為道,朝亦可隱,市亦可隱。隱初在我,不在於物。公等無以難之。」
又曰:汜騰字無忌,敦煌人。舉孝廉,除郎中。屬天下兵亂,去官還家。太守張閟造之,閉門不見,禮遺一無所受。嘆曰:「吾聞亂世貴而能貧,乃可以免。」散家財五十萬以施宗族,柴門灌園,琴書自適。刺史張軌征之為府司馬,騰曰:「門一杜其可開乎!」固辭。病卒。
又曰:王長文字德郁,廣漢人。少以才學知名,放蕩不羈。州郡辟為別駕,乃微服竊出,舉州莫知所之。后於成都市中,蹲踞而坐,嚙胡餅食之。刺史知其不出,乃禮遣之。於是閉門自守,不交人事。著《通玄經》四卷,文言卦象,可用以為卜筮。
