1 開宗明義:
仲尼居,曾子侍。子曰:「先王有至德要道,以順天下,民用和睦,上下無怨。汝知之乎?」曾子避席曰:「參不敏,何足以知之?」子曰:「夫孝,德之本也,教之所由生也。復坐,吾語汝。身體髮膚,受之父母,不敢毀傷,孝之始也。立身行道,揚名於後世,以顯父母,孝之終也。夫孝,始於事親,中於事君,終於立身。《大雅》云:『無念爾祖,聿脩厥德。』」
The Scope and Meaning...:
(Once), when Zhong Ni was unoccupied, and his disciple Zeng was sitting by in attendance on him, the Master said, "The ancient kings had a perfect virtue and all-embracing rule of conduct, through which they were in accord with all under heaven. By the practice of it the people were brought to live in peace and harmony, and there was no ill-will between superiors and inferiors. Do you know what it was?"
Zeng rose from his mat and said, "How should I, Shen, who am so devoid of intelligence, be able to know this?"
The Master said, "(It was filial piety.) Now filial piety is the root of (all) virtue, and (the stem) out of which grows (all moral) teaching. Sit down again, and I will explain the subject to you. Our bodies - to every hair and bit of skin - are received by us from our parents, and we must not presume to injure or wound them. This is the beginning of filial piety. When we have established our character by the practice of the (filial) course, so as to make our name famous in future ages and thereby glorify our parents, this is the end of filial piety. It commences with the service of parents; it proceeds to the service of the ruler; it is completed by the establishment of character.
It is said in the Major Odes of the Kingdom: Ever think of your ancestor, Cultivating your virtue."

告琳:頃來聞汝與諸友生講肄書傳,滋滋晝夜,衎衎不怠,善矣。人之進道,唯問其志,取必以漸,勤則得多。山霤至柔,石為之穿;蝎蟲至弱,木為之弊。夫霤非石之鑿,蝎非木之鑿,然而能以微脆之形陷堅剛之體,豈非積漸之致乎?《訓》曰:徒學知之未可多,履而行之乃足佳。故學者、所以飾百行也。侍中子國,明達淵博,雅好絕倫,言不及利,行不欺名,動遵禮法,少小及長,操行如故。雖與群臣並居近侍,頗見崇禮,不供褻事。獨得掌御唾壺,朝廷之士莫不榮之。此汝親所見也。《詩》不云乎?「無念爾祖,聿脩厥德。」又曰:「操斧伐柯,其則不遠。」遠則尼父,近則子國,於以立身,其庶矣乎。

二年,春,秦孟明視帥師伐晉,以報殽之役,二月,晉侯禦之,先且居將中軍,趙衰佐之,王官無地御戎,狐鞫居為右,甲子,及秦師戰于彭衙,秦師敗績,晉人謂秦拜賜之師,戰于殽也,晉梁弘御戎,萊駒為右,戰之明日,晉襄公縛秦囚,使萊駒以戈斬之,囚呼,萊駒失戈,狼瞫取戈以斬囚,禽之以從公乘,遂以為右,箕之役,先軫黜之,而立續簡伯,狼瞫怒,其友曰,盍死之,瞫曰,吾未獲死所,其友曰,吾與女為難,瞫曰,周志有之,勇則害上,不登於明堂,死而不義,非勇也,共用之謂勇,吾以勇求右,無勇而黜,亦其所也,謂上不我知,黜而宜,乃知我矣,子姑待之,及彭衙既陳,以其屬馳秦師,死焉,晉師從之,大敗秦師,君子謂狼瞫於是乎君子,詩曰,君子如怒,亂庶遄沮,又曰,王赫斯怒,爰整其旅,怒不作亂,而以從師,可謂君子矣。
秦伯猶用孟明,孟明增脩國政,重施於民,趙成子言於諸大夫曰,秦師又至,將必辟之,懼而增德,不可當也,詩曰,毋念爾祖,聿脩厥德,孟明念之矣,念德不怠,其可敵乎。
丁丑,作僖公主,書不時也。
晉人以公不朝,來討,公如晉,夏,四月,己巳,晉人使陽處父盟公,以恥之,書曰,及晉處父盟,以厭之也,適晉不書,諱之也。
公未至,六月,穆伯會諸侯,及晉司空士縠盟于垂隴,晉討衛故也,書士縠,堪其事也,陳侯為衛請成于晉,執孔達以說。
秋,八月,丁卯,大事于大廟,躋僖公,逆祀也,於是夏父弗忌為宗伯,尊僖公,且明見曰,吾見新鬼大,故鬼小,先大後小,順也,躋聖賢,明也,明順,禮也,君子以為失禮,禮無不順,祀,國之大事也,而逆之,可謂禮乎,子雖齊聖,不先父食久矣,故禹不先鯀,湯不先契,文武不先不窋,宋祖帝乙,鄭祖厲王,猶上祖也,是以魯頌曰,春秋匪解,享祀不忒,皇皇后帝,皇祖后稷,君子曰禮,謂其后稷親,而先帝也,詩曰,問我諸姑,遂及伯姊,君子曰,禮謂其姊親而先姑也,仲尼曰,臧文仲其不仁者三,不知者三,下展禽,廢六關,妾織蒲,三不仁也,作虛器,縱逆祀,祀爰居,三不知也。
冬,晉先且居,宋公子成,陳轅選,鄭公子歸生,伐秦,取汪及彭衙而還,以報彭衙之役,卿不書,為穆公故,尊秦也,謂之崇德。

Wen Wang:
They became subject to Zhou.
The appointment of Heaven is not constant.
The officers of Yin, admirable and alert,
Assist at the libations in [our] capital; -
They assist at those libations,
Always wearing the hatchets on their lower garment and their peculiar cap.
O ye loyal ministers of the king,
Ever think of your ancestor!

無念爾祖、聿脩厥德。
永言配命、自求多福。
殷之未喪師、克配上帝。
宜鑒于殷、駿命不易。
Wen Wang:
Ever think of your ancestor,
Cultivating your virtue,
Always striving to accord with the will [of Heaven].
So shall you be seeking for much happiness.
Before Yin lost the multitudes,

Look to Yin as a beacon;
