以清節自守,不降志辱身為賢乎?是則避世離俗,長沮、桀溺之類也。雖不離俗,節與離世者鈞,清其身而不輔其主,守其節而不勞其民。大賢之在世也,時行則行,時止則止,銓可否之宜,以制清濁之行。子貢讓而止善,子路受而觀德。夫讓、廉也;受、則貪也。貪有益,廉有損,推行之節,不得常清眇也。伯夷無可,孔子謂之非。操違於聖,難以為賢矣。或問於孔子曰:「顏淵何人也?」曰:「仁人也,丘不如也。」「子貢何人也?」曰:「辯人也,丘弗如也。」「子路何人也?」曰:「勇人也,丘弗如也。」客曰:「三子者皆賢於夫子,而為夫子服役,何也?」孔子曰:「丘能仁且忍,辯且詘,勇且怯。以三子之能,易丘之道,弗為也。」孔子知所設施之矣。有高才潔行,無知明以設施之,則與愚而無操者同一實也。

「且用之則行,聖訓也;舍之則藏,至順也。夫九河盈溢,非一卖所防;帶甲百萬,非一勇所抗。今子責匹夫以清宇宙,庸可以水旱而累堯、湯乎?懼煙炎之毀熸,何光芒之敢揚哉!且夫地將震而樞星直,井無景則日陰食,元首寬則望舒朓,侯王肅則月側匿。是以君子推微達著,尋端見緒,履霜知冰,踐露知暑。時行則行,時止則止,消息盈沖,取諸天紀。利用遭泰,可與處否,樂天知命,持神任己。群車方奔乎險路,安能與之齊軌?思危難而自豫,故在賤而不恥。方將騁馳乎典籍之崇塗,休息乎仁義之淵藪,槃旋乎周、孔之庭宇,揖儒、墨而與為友。舒之足以光四表,收之則莫能知其所有。若乃丁千載之運,應神靈之符,闓閶闔,乘天衢,擁華蓋而奉皇樞,納玄策於聖德,宣太平於中區。計合謀從,己之圖也;勳績不立,予之辜也。龜鳳山翳,霧露不除,踊躍草萊,祗見其愚。不我知者,將謂之迂。脩業思真,棄此焉如?靜以俟命,不斁不渝。『百歲之後,歸乎其居。』幸其獲稱,天所誘也。罕漫而已,非己咎也。昔伯翳綜聲於鳥語,葛盧辯音於鳴牛,董父受氏於豢龍,奚仲供德於衡輈,倕氏興政於巧工,造父登御於驊騮,非子享土於善圉,狼瞫取右於禽囚,弓父畢精於筋角,佽非明勇於赴流,壽王創基於格五,東方要幸於談優,上官效力於執蓋,弘羊據相於運籌。僕不能參跡於若人,故抱璞而優遊。」

艮,止也。時止則止,時行則行,動靜不失其時,其道光明。艮其止,止其所也。上下敵應,不相與也。是以不獲其身,行其庭不見其人,无咎也。
Tuan Zhuan:
Gen denotes stopping or resting; - resting when it is the time to rest, and acting when it is the time to act. When one's movements and restings all take place at the proper time for them, his way (of proceeding) is brilliant and intelligent. Resting in one's resting-point is resting in one's proper place. The upper and lower (lines of the hexagram) exactly correspond to each other, but are without any interaction; hence it is said that '(the subject of the hexagram) has no consciousness of self; that when he walks in his courtyard, he does not see (any of) the persons in it; and that there will be no error.'

艮:乾分三陽為長中少,至《艮》為少男,本體屬陽,陽極則止,反生陰象。《易》云:「《艮》、止也。」於人為手,為背;取象為山,為石,為門,為狗。上艮下艮二象,土木分氣候,與《兌》為飛伏。世上見宗廟,三公為應,陰陽遷次,長幼分形。庚寅至乙未,陰長陽極,升降六位,進退順時,消息盈虛。積筭起庚寅至己丑,周而復始。五星從位起熒惑,胃宿從位降丙寅,分數位三十六,金木相敵,升降以時。《艮》止於物,背於物,《易》云:「時止則止。時行則行。」剛極陽反,陰長積氣,止於九三。初六變陽,取其虛中,文明在內,成於《賁》,次降入《賁》卦。
