顏淵喟然歎曰:「仰之彌高,鑽之彌堅;瞻之在前,忽焉在後。夫子循循然善誘人,博我以文,約我以禮。欲罷不能,既竭吾才,如有所立卓爾。雖欲從之,末由也已。」
Zi Han:
Yan Yuan, in admiration of the Master's doctrines, sighed and said, "I looked up to them, and they seemed to become more high; I tried to penetrate them, and they seemed to become more firm; I looked at them before me, and suddenly they seemed to be behind. The Master, by orderly method, skillfully leads men on. He enlarged my mind with learning, and taught me the restraints of propriety. When I wish to give over the study of his doctrines, I cannot do so, and having exerted all my ability, there seems something to stand right up before me; but though I wish to follow and lay hold of it, I really find no way to do so."

或曰:「仲尼稱自古皆有死,老子曰神仙之可學。夫聖人之言,信而有徵,道家所說,誕而難用。」抱朴子曰:「仲尼,儒者之聖也;老子,得道之聖也。儒教近而易見,故宗之者衆焉。道意遠而難識,故達之者寡焉。道者,萬殊之源也。儒者,大淳之流也。三皇以往,道治也。帝王以來,儒教也。談者鹹知高世之敦朴,而薄季俗之澆散,何獨重仲尼而輕老氏乎?是玩華藻於木末,而不識所生之有本也。何異乎貴明珠而賤淵潭,愛和璧而惡荊山,不知淵潭者,明珠之所自出,荊山者,和璧之所由生也。且夫養性者,道之餘也;禮樂者,儒之末也。所以貴儒者,以其移風易俗,不唯揖讓與盤旋也。所以尊道者,以其不言而化行,匪獨養生之一事也。若儒道果有先後,則仲尼未可專信,而老氏未可孤用。仲尼既敬問伯陽,願比老彭。又自以知魚鳥而不識龍,喻老氏於龍,蓋其心服之辭,非空言也。與顏回所言,瞻之在前,忽然在後,鑽之彌堅,仰之彌高,無以異也。」

後魏王侯外戚公主。擅"擅"原作"阻",據明鈔本改。山海之富,居川林之饒。爭修園宅,互相誇競。崇門豐室,阿戶連房。飛舘生風。重樓起霧。高臺芳樹,家家而築。花林曲池,園園而有。莫不桃李夏綠。竹栢冬青。而河間王琛最為豪首,常與高陽爭衡。造文栢堂如徽音殿。置玉井金罐,以五色絲為繩。妓女三百人盡皆國色,有婢朝雲善吹箎,能為團扇歌隴上聲。琛為秦州刺史,諸羌外叛,屢討之不降。琛令朝雲假為貧嫗,吹箎而乞。諸羌聞之。悉皆流涕,迭相謂曰。何為棄墳井,在山谷為寇耶。相率歸降。秦民語曰。快馬健兒,不如老嫗吹箎。琛在秦中,多無政績。遣使向西域求名馬,遠至波斯國。得千里馬。號曰追風赤。次有七百里者十餘。皆有名字。以銀為槽,金為環鎖。諸王服其豪富。琛甞語人云。晉室石崇,乃是庶姓。猶能雉頭狐腋。畫卵雕薪。況我大魏天王,不為華侈。造迎風舘于後園。窗戶之上,列錢青瑣,玉鳳銜鈴。金龍吐斾。素柰朱李,枝條入簷。妓女樓上坐而摘食。琛嘗會宗室,陳諸寶器。金瓶銀甕百餘口。甌擎盤合稱是。其餘酒器。有水晶鉢。瑪瑙硫璃碗。赤玉巵數十枚。作工奇妙,中土所無,皆從西來。又陳女樂及諸名馬。復引諸王按行庫藏。錦𦋺珠璣。冰羅霧縠。充積其內。琛謂章武王融曰。不恨我不見石崇,恨石崇不見我。融立性貪暴,志欲無厭。見之歎惋,不覺成疾。還家,臥三日不能起。江陽王繼來省疾,諭之曰。卿之財產,應得抗衡,何為羨歎,以至於此。融曰。常謂高陽一人,寶貨多于融。誰知河間,瞻之在前。繼曰。卿欲作袁術之在淮南,不知世間復有劉備也。及爾朱氏亂後,王侯第宅,多題為寺宇。壽丘里閭,列剎相望。祗洹鬱起,寶塔高壯。四月八日,京都士女,多至河間寺。觀其堂廡綺麗,無不歎息。以為蓬萊仙室,亦不是過也。出《伽藍記》
