天下有道,卻走馬以糞。天下無道,戎馬生於郊。禍莫大於不知足;咎莫大於欲得。故知足之足,常足矣。
Dao De Jing:
(The moderating of desire or ambition)
When the Dao prevails in the world, they send back their swift horses to (draw) the dung- carts. When the Dao is disregarded in the world, the war-horses breed in the border lands.
There is no guilt greater than to sanction ambition; no calamity greater than to be discontented with one's lot; no fault greater than the wish to be getting. Therefore the sufficiency of contentment is an enduring and unchanging sufficiency.

老子曰:夫人道者,全性保真,不虧其身,遭急迫難,精通乎天,若乃未始出其宗者,何為而不成,死生同域,不可脅凌,又況官天地,懷萬物,返造化,含至和,而已未嘗死者也。精誠形乎內,而外喻於人心,此不傳之道也。聖人在上,懷道而不言,澤及萬民,故不言之教,芒乎大哉!君臣乖心,倍譎見于天,神氣相應,微矣,此謂不言之辯,不道之道也。夫召遠者使無為焉,親近者言無事焉,唯夜行者能有之,卻走馬以糞,車軌不接於遠方之外,是謂坐馳陸沉。天道無私就也,無私去也,能者有餘,詘者不足,順之者利,逆之者凶。是故以智為治者難以持國,唯同乎大和而持自然應者,為能有之。

夫陽燧取火于日,方諸取露於月,天地之間,巧曆不能舉其數,手徵忽怳,不能覽其光。然以掌握之中,引類於太極之上,而水火可立致者,陰陽同氣相動也。此傅說之所以騎辰尾也。故至陰飂飂,至陽赫赫,兩者交接成和,而萬物生焉。眾雄而無雌,又何化之所能造乎?所謂不言之辯,不道之道也。故召遠者使無為焉,親近者使無事焉,惟夜行者為能有之。故卻走馬以糞,而車軌不接于遠方之外,是謂坐馳陸沈,晝冥宵明,以冬鑠膠,以夏造冰。夫道者,無私就也,無私去也。能者有餘,拙者不足,順之者利,逆之者凶。譬如隋侯之珠,和氏之璧,得之者富,失之者貧,得失之度,深微窈冥,難以知論,不可以辯說也。何以知其然?今夫地黃主屬骨,而甘草主生肉之藥也,以其屬骨,責其生肉,以其生肉,論其屬骨,是猶王孫綽之欲倍偏枯之藥,而欲以生殊死之人,亦可謂失論矣!
