17 為政:
子曰:「!誨女知之乎?知之為知之,不知為不知,是知也。」
Wei Zheng:
The Master said, "You, shall I teach you what knowledge is? When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it - this is knowledge."

公冶長 - Gong Ye Chang

7 公冶長:
子曰:「道不行,乘桴浮于海。從我者其與?」子路聞之喜。子曰:「也好勇過我,無所取材。」
Gong Ye Chang:
The Master said, "My doctrines make no way. I will get upon a raft, and float about on the sea. He that will accompany me will be You, I dare to say." Zi Lu hearing this was glad, upon which the Master said, "You is fonder of daring than I am. He does not exercise his judgment upon matters."

8 公冶長:
孟武伯問:「子路仁乎?」子曰:「不知也。」又問。子曰:「也,千乘之國,可使治其賦也,不知其仁也。」「求也何如?」子曰:「求也,千室之邑,百乘之家,可使為之宰也,不知其仁也。」「赤也何如?」子曰:「赤也,束帶立於朝,可使與賓客言也,不知其仁也。」
Gong Ye Chang:
Meng Wu asked about Zi Lu, whether he was perfectly virtuous. The Master said, "I do not know." He asked again, when the Master replied, "You, in a kingdom of a thousand chariots, might be employed to manage the military levies, but I do not know whether he be perfectly virtuous." "And what do you say of Qiu?" The Master replied, "Qiu, in a city of a thousand families, or a clan of a hundred chariots, might be employed as governor, but I do not know whether he is perfectly virtuous." "What do you say of Chi?" The Master replied, "Chi, with his sash girt and standing in a court, might be employed to converse with the visitors and guests, but I do not know whether he is perfectly virtuous."

季康子問:「仲由可使從政也與?」子曰:「也果,於從政乎何有?」曰:「賜也,可使從政也與?」曰:「賜也達,於從政乎何有?」曰:「求也,可使從政也與?」曰:「求也藝,於從政乎何有?」
Yong Ye:
Ji Kang asked about Zhong You, whether he was fit to be employed as an officer of government. The Master said, "You is a man of decision; what difficulty would he find in being an officer of government?" Kang asked, "Is Ci fit to be employed as an officer of government?" and was answered, "Ci is a man of intelligence; what difficulty would he find in being an officer of government?" Asked, "Is Qui fit to be employed as an officer of government?" the master replied, "Qiu is a man of various ability; what difficulty would he find in being an officer of government?""

子曰:「衣敝縕袍,與衣狐貉者立,而不恥者,其也與?『不忮不求,何用不臧?』」子路終身誦之。子曰:「是道也,何足以臧?」
Zi Han:
The Master said, "Dressed himself in a tattered robe quilted with hemp, yet standing by the side of men dressed in furs, and not ashamed - ah! it is You who is equal to this! He dislikes none, he covets nothing - what can he do but what is good!" Zi Lu kept continually repeating these words of the ode, when the Master said, "Those things are by no means sufficient to constitute perfect excellence."

13 先進:
閔子侍側,誾誾如也;子路,行行如也;冉有、子貢,侃侃如也。子樂。「若也,不得其死然。」
Xian Jin:
The disciple Min was standing by his side, looking bland and precise; Zi Lu, looking bold and soldierly; Ran You and Zi Gong, with a free and straightforward manner. The Master was pleased. He said, "You there - he will not die a natural death."

15 先進:
子曰:「之瑟奚為於丘之門?」門人不敬子路。子曰:「也升堂矣,未入於室也。」
Xian Jin:
The Master said, "What has the lute of You to do in my door?" The other disciples began not to respect Zi Lu. The Master said, "You has ascended to the hall, though he has not yet passed into the inner apartments."

18 先進:
柴也愚,參也魯,師也辟,也喭。
Xian Jin:
Chai is simple. Shen is dull. Shi is specious. You is coarse.

22 先進:
子路問:「聞斯行諸?」子曰:「有父兄在,如之何其聞斯行之?」冉有問:「聞斯行諸?」子曰:「聞斯行之。」公西華曰:「也問聞斯行諸,子曰『有父兄在』;求也問聞斯行諸,子曰『聞斯行之』。赤也惑,敢問。」子曰:「求也退,故進之;也兼人,故退之。」
Xian Jin:
Zi Lu asked whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard. The Master said, "There are your father and elder brothers to be consulted - why should you act on that principle of immediately carrying into practice what you hear?" Ran You asked the same, whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard, and the Master answered, "Immediately carry into practice what you hear." Gong Xi Hua said, "You asked whether he should carry immediately into practice what he heard, and you said, 'There are your father and elder brothers to be consulted.' Qiu asked whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard, and you said, 'Carry it immediately into practice.' I, Chi, am perplexed, and venture to ask you for an explanation." The Master said, "Qiu is retiring and slow; therefore I urged him forward. You has more than his own share of energy; therefore I kept him back."

24 先進:
季子然問:「仲由、冉求可謂大臣與?」子曰:「吾以子為異之問,曾與求之問。所謂大臣者:以道事君,不可則止。今與求也,可謂具臣矣。」曰:「然則從之者與?」子曰:「弒父與君,亦不從也。」
Xian Jin:
Ji Zi Ran asked whether Zhong You and Ran Qiu could be called great ministers. The Master said, "I thought you would ask about some extraordinary individuals, and you only ask about You and Qiu! What is called a great minister, is one who serves his prince according to what is right, and when he finds he cannot do so, retires. Now, as to You and Qiu, they may be called ordinary ministers." Zi Ran said, "Then they will always follow their chief - will they?" The Master said, "In an act of parricide or regicide, they would not follow him."
