命令相曰:「大夫蠡、大夫種、大夫庸、大夫睪、大夫車成,越王與此五大夫謀伐吳,遂滅之,雪會稽之恥,卒為霸主。範蠡去之,種死之。寡人以此二大夫者為皆賢。孔子曰:『殷有三仁。』今以越王之賢,與蠡種之能,此三人者,寡人亦以為越有三仁。其於君何如?桓公決疑於管仲,寡人決疑於君。」仲舒伏地再拜對曰:「仲舒智褊而學淺,不足以決之。雖然,王有問於臣,臣不敢不悉以對,禮也。臣仲舒聞,昔者魯君問於柳下惠曰:『我欲攻齊,何如?』柳下惠對曰:『不可。』退而有憂色,曰:『吾聞之也,謀伐國者,不問於仁人也。此何為至於我?』但見問而尚羞之,而況乃與為詐以伐吳乎?其不宜明矣。以此觀之,越本無一仁,而安得三仁?仁人者正其道不謀其利,修其理不急其功,致無為而習俗大化,可謂仁聖矣。三王是也。《春秋》之義,貴信而賤詐。詐人而勝之,雖有功,君子弗為也。是以仲尼之門,五尺童子,言羞稱五伯。為其詐以成功,苟為而已也,故不足稱於大君子之門。五伯者,比於他諸侯為賢者,比於仁賢,何賢之有?譬猶武夫比於美玉也。臣仲舒伏地再拜以聞。」
